John King Fair Bank, Fei Zhengqing, Fei Zhengqing (1907.5.24. - 199 1.9. 14.)

Fei Zhengqing is a tenured professor at Harvard University, a famous historian, the most prestigious observer of China in the United States, a leading figure in the field of modern and contemporary history of China in the United States, "the number one expert on China" and the founder of Harvard East Asia Research Center. Before his death, he served as vice chairman of the American Far East Association, chairman of the Asian Association, chairman of the Historical Society, and chairman of the East Asian Research Council. He is also a US government employee, social activist and policy adviser.

Fei Zhengqing devoted himself to China for 50 years. Most of his works were about China from the time he entered Oxford until his death. For more than half a century, Fei Zhengqing has examined and inspected China from his own unique perspective. His research, works and main viewpoints represent the views of mainstream American society, which not only influenced several generations of American sinologists and China scholars in the west, but also directly or indirectly influenced the attitudes and views of American political circles and the public towards China and the formulation of American policy toward China. Many influential experts on China in the United States today come from his family.

History of China in Cambridge.

As the main organizer of American China Studies, Fei Zhengqing has also done a lot of useful academic popularization. He presided over the compilation of textbooks such as East Asian Civilization and China Question. It is particularly worth mentioning that he presided over the compilation of a set of 15 volumes of History of China in Cambridge, and the Chinese translations are History of the Late Qing Dynasty in Cambridge, History of the Republic of China in Cambridge, History of China People in Cambridge and China Revolution. The History of China in Cambridge was planned from 1966 to the last volume, and the People of China and the History of China was published by 199 1. It took * * 25 years, and each volume was written by subject experts. Finally, senior editors assembled to introduce the evolution of China's modern history to the world, which had a great influence. This set of books embodies Fei Zhengqing's painstaking efforts. He is not only the editor-in-chief, but also one of the main contributors. Since 1966, he and more than 100 China experts from all over the world have contributed to the history of China in Cambridge, which basically reflects the highest level of contemporary western China history research. Since 1985, this Chinese version of Essays on Super Topics (by Fei Zhengqing) has been published in China, which has been widely welcomed and praised by academic circles. People who pay attention to the academic frontier will notice that this set of Cambridge History of China, especially some viewpoints of each volume since the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, has already exerted an influence on the academic circles in China.

-"Observing China"

Asking questions to the point is a core goal of Fei Zhengqing's long-term career, and it is also one of the goals he achieved through book reviews. His book reviews are as excellent as his monographs. Observing China is a collection of 26 papers, most of which are book reviews, and most of them are published in the New York Book Review. However, Fei Zhengqing did not simply compile these book reviews into a book, but re-edited, deleted, modified and reorganized the scattered fragments. Therefore, these book reviews are divided into five historical themes about China's modern history: the role played by foreign imperialism in China, the relationship between China's revolutionary leaders and their people, the "normalization" of Sino-US relations after twenty years of hostility, the Cultural Revolution, and the recent judgments of some Americans on the China issue.

Fei Zhengqing's Observing China was published by World Knowledge Publishing House 200 1, translated by Fu Guangming. Among them, * * * lists five major titles, which are neo-imperialist views; Mao's China insider; The road to normalization; Cultural Revolution; Aftershock: the disillusionment of American optimism.
