The error rate of book editing and proofreading refers to the ratio of the number of editing and proofreading errors in a book to the total number of words in the book, expressed in units of ten thousand. In actual appraisal, the whole book can be appraised according to the results of spot checks.

Error rate is one of the important criteria for testing publications. According to the Regulations on Book Quality Management promulgated by the State Press and Publication Administration:
Books whose error rate does not exceed110000 are qualified for editing and proofreading.
Books whose error rate exceeds110000 are not qualified for editing and proofreading.
The circular pointed out that according to Article 67 of the Regulations on Publishing Management and Articles 16 and 17 of the Regulations on Book Quality Management, the General Administration of Press and Publication will impose penalties on relevant publishing units according to law.
The relevant publishing entity shall, within 30 days from the date of publication of the inspection results, take back all the books with an error rate greater than 1/10000 and less than 5/10000, and continue to issue them after correction and reprinting.
Books with an error rate of more than 5/10000 shall be recovered within 30 days from the date of publication of the inspection results.
