Kurt Muller and his wife Rita have been cooking for the homeless in the German capital Berlin for eleven years. They first started a long and hot summer, when most Germans went on holiday. Kurt and his wife stay at home, make sandwiches, set the table in the street and give food to the homeless.
The mullers soon realized that food and clothes were not enough. "These people also need warmth and care," Rita said. Mr. and Mrs. Mueller did not hesitate to give their phone number to the people in the street and told them to call at any time. Rita makes sure that someone answers the phone at home. Their home is always open to those who can't stand spending the night in the street.
The couple soon spent all their time and money, so Kurt went to the food and clothing company to seek donations. Today, more than 30 companies regularly donate food and other items to charity, and volunteers help deliver them to the homeless. The public also donated clothes and money, and a shoe manufacturer donated new shoes.
Kurt and Rita work hard without pay. "We feel like parents," Rita said. "Parents shouldn't expect to help their children with money. The love we get in the street is our salary. " Although Rita admits that she often feels tired. She said that she would continue her work because she liked the feeling of changing the world.
When we hear "homeless people", most of us think of developing countries. But in fact, homeless people are everywhere. For example, how many of us would expect to see someone living on the streets of a developed country like Germany?
