Sperm and egg cells are called germ cells, which are split from somatic cells. In the process of division, genes also divide, that is, the genes in germ cells are single. When sperm and egg cells are combined, genes at corresponding positions in sperm and egg cells are combined into a pair. The genes of offspring come from half of parents, which is inherited in sexual reproduction.
