1September, 1983, Zhanjiang was abolished, Zhanjiang and Maoming were changed into provincial cities, and the new system of leading cities and counties was implemented. Wuchuan, Xuwen, Haikang, Suixi and Lianjiang counties under the jurisdiction of the former Zhanjiang area were included in Zhanjiang City; Dianbai, Huazhou, Gaozhou and Xinyi counties were included in Maoming City; Yangjiang and Yangchun counties were included in Jiangmen City, and then Yangjiang City was established.

Zhanjiang lies between east longitude109 40'-10 58' and north latitude 2013'-2157', including all of Leizhou Peninsula and a part of the northern part of the Peninsula. It borders the South China Sea in the east, Hainan Province across Qiongzhou Strait in the south, Beibu Gulf in the west, southwest China in the back, and Maoming City in the northeast. The urban area is located in the northeast of Leizhou Peninsula, with east longitude 1 10 4' and north latitude 2 1 12'.
Zhanjiang is listed as one of the "one core and two poles" central cities in Beibu Gulf urban agglomeration. According to the plan, Zhanjiang should give full play to the advantages of the southern port of Zhanjiang, speed up the construction of a regional comprehensive transportation hub, an advanced manufacturing base and a science and education innovation center, and build a national marine economic innovation and development demonstration city and an ecological bay city.
There are 37 productive berths in Zhanjiang Port, including 2 berths of 300,000-ton crude oil, 400,000-ton bulk cargo 1 berth, 250,000-ton iron ore berth 1 berth, coal 1 berth and container 1 berth.
