Xuanzang recorded in "Records of the Western Regions in Datang" that when he came to Nalanduo Temple, "there were more than 50 Galand (referring to the courtyards where monks lived) with more than 10,000 monks". Another "Tang Priest" who came to Nalanduo Temple to study 40 years later than Xuanzang described in the Book of Changes that Nalanduo Temple is like a square city, with three floors, each more than ten feet high and made of bricks. There are nine monk rooms on each side of each temple, which are square and about ten feet wide. There are three libraries in the temple, the largest of which is 9 stories high. There are more than 100 forums in Nalanduo Temple every day, and the academic atmosphere is very strong. We can imagine why Nalanduo made Xuanzang yearn for it.
Xuanzang came to Nalanduo Temple and was warmly welcomed. At that time, Master Jiexian, who was over 100 years old, accepted him as his personal disciple and personally taught yoga theory. Xuanzang is diligent and studious. He studies the classics carefully every day. His "foreign language" is also excellent, and he speaks Sanskrit better than the locals. In Nalanduo Temple, Xuanzang discussed with many scholars. According to Cien Biography, there were 1000 people who could speak 20 Confucian classics, 500 people in 30, and only 10 people in 50, including Master Xuanzang. Xuanzang's level was among the top ten among thousands of senior scholars in Nalanduo Temple at that time. Because of his excellent grades, Xuanzang also obtained the qualification of "staying in school to teach" and was promoted to be the deputy lecturer of Nalanduo Temple; Nalanduo Temple also equipped him with a "special car", and he can enjoy the treatment of riding an elephant when he goes out. Besides Xuanzang, there are other foreigners who come to study in Nalanduo Temple.
