The basic category of China Library Classification, also known as the basic order, is the most general and basic distinction and arrangement of books, and it is the general outline of the classification table, which fundamentally determines its classification system. China Library Classification first divides human knowledge into three categories: philosophy, social science and natural science. Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory are the theoretical guides of our social practice, ranking first as basic categories, while some books with complex contents that cannot be classified according to the nature of a certain subject are summarized as "comprehensive books" and ranked last as basic categories, thus forming five basic categories of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory; Philosophy; Social science; Natural science: comprehensive books.
The basic category is the first category in the classification table, and all small and medium-sized categories are developed and differentiated from the basic category, which embodies the idea and viewpoint of classification. Among the basic categories, due to the rich content and rapid development of social science and natural science, Chinese Library Classification is divided into 9 categories under social science and 10 categories under natural science, and further forms a classification table of 22 categories, each of which is represented by a Chinese phonetic alphabet in a fixed order. Under the general category, according to the different properties of books, it is divided into several basic categories, and then divided into several small categories step by step. Generally, letters are used to indicate categories, and letters and numbers are used to indicate category classification under categories. In this way, a systematic and gradually expanding category list is formed.
There are about 50,000 different categories in China Library Classification. It is impossible and unnecessary for everyone to remember, but it is beneficial to borrow books if you are familiar with the major.
