Discussion on documents and setting folders

In operating systems above Windows 2000, careful friends will notice that there is a folder for files and settings on the system disk. If you often check its size, you will find that the capacity of this folder is increasing! What does our daily operation have to do with it? Are there any very fatal and important data? How to lose weight in this folder? How to back up the system when reinstalling? The following article will solve the mystery for you.

First, learn about documents and set up folders.

The documents and settings folder is used to store user configuration information in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 operating system. By default, it is in the root directory of the system partition, including: administrator, all users, default user and user folder (as shown in figure 1). If hidden files and system files (folders) are displayed at the same time, you will find more folders, such as LocalService and NetworkService.

Documents and settings store some information about the user's current desktop environment, application settings and personal data. The user profile also includes all network connections, desktop size, number of colors, mouse settings, Start menu, network server, etc. When we log in to Windows 2000/XP/200, the system will automatically create a configuration file for us. At the same time, by providing each user with the same desktop as when they last logged on to the computer, the user profile can provide a consistent desktop environment for each user. Mastering the relevant knowledge of this folder will bring us a lot of convenience in optimizing the system. Let's take windows xp as an example to understand the practical application of this folder.

Second, make multi-user data * * * more convenient:

Windows xp supports multi-user operation, and each user needs to log in with his user name and password. And each user will create a folder named user name in the documents and settings directory, which stores the program settings and system configuration information of the current user. If multiple users want to use the programs and files in the computer together, we can make it convenient for multiple users to share data through documents and settings.

(a) Let multiple users * * * enjoy the start menu and desktop:

1, involving folders:

User Name/Start Menu All Users \ Start Menu

2. Folder function:

The start menu is a folder for storing the contents of each user's start menu. The program in the start menu of each user in the system consists of two parts, one of which is stored in the start menu under the user name folder. The other part is stored in the Start Menu of All Users.

3. Application: The "Start Menu" folder under the "User Name" folder stores shortcuts to programs copied by the current user when installing the system; The folder All Users Start Menu stores the programs used by each user.

If we want the shortcuts of all programs in the computer to be displayed in the start menu of each user in our system, then it will be very convenient for us to run the programs. In fact, in order to enable all users to use all programs in the system. We can copy shortcuts that need * * * programs to the Start Menu folder of All Users. Then, copy the shortcuts of all programs in the "Start Menu" folder under the user name to "All Users \ Start Menu". When installing this program in the future, we only need to change the copy path of the shortcut to the "Start Menu" folder of "All Users". In this way, after installing the program, its shortcut will be copied directly to the Start Menu folder of All Users. When modifying, type "Regedit" in the Run dialog box, open the Registry Editor, and then expand the branch of the key _ current _ user \ software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ currentversion \ Explorer \ shell folder, and find the "Programs" subitem in the key value on the right. Double-click this sub-item to open the dialog box for editing strings, and change the path of the following "numerical data" item to "c: \ documents and settings \ teach \ start menu \ program".

Tip: Through this aspect, we can also enjoy all users' desktop files.

(2) It is more convenient for multiple users to surf the Internet;

1. Folders involved:

Favorites: This folder is located under each user name directory.

2. Folder function:

When surfing the Internet, all our favorite websites will be saved in this folder.

3. Application:

Users who often surf the Internet will collect their favorite websites into favorites for future use. However, if we enter other users, we need to collect the required URLs again. If we put our favorite websites in the same folder, we can quickly find the favorite websites of any user. When modifying, first specify a folder for favorite URLs, and then copy all URLs in favorites under other user names into this folder. In order to save our favorite websites in this folder in the future, we need to modify the path of this folder in the registry. Start the Registry Editor, find the branch of the Shell folder according to the above aspects, and then double-click the "Favorites" sub-item in the branch to open the "Edit String" dialog box of the sub-item (as shown in Figure 2), and enter the location of the specified favorite in the "Numerical Data" item of the dialog box. Subsequently, other users also modified according to this method. In the future, every user's favorite website will be saved in the designated folder.

(3) It is more convenient for multiple users to visit online neighbors.

1, involving folders:

Nethood: This file is located in each user directory.

2. Folder function:

When each user uses My Network Places, this folder contains shortcuts to the * * * shared folders stored in My Network Places. Through these shortcuts, we can quickly open the required * * * shared folder.

3. Application:

If each user's shortcut to visit the online neighbors is saved in the designated folder, we can quickly access the shared folder of computers in the same network segment in any user environment, which brings convenience to our file sharing. When modifying, open the registry editor, find the "Nethood" subitem under the Shell Folders branch, and then open the "Edit String" dialog box of this subitem (as shown in Figure 3). Just enter the location of the specified folder in the "Numerical Data" item of the dialog box, and other users will also modify it according to this method. In the future, we can save shortcuts to shared folders accessed by various users through online neighbors in this folder.

(4) * * * Enjoy IE download file buffering.

1, involving folders:

Temporary Internet Files: This folder is located in the local settings folder under each user's directory.

2. Folder function:

Local Settings: This folder holds application data, history and temporary files. When we run the programs installed in the system, the programs will automatically extract the data of the applications in this folder.

Internet temporary files: ie download file buffer. When browsing a web page with IE browser, the system will automatically put the content of the browsed web page into this directory. When you open the same web page again, the system will extract it from this directory, which can speed up the browsing.

3. Application: There is such a huge cache folder under each user's folder. Although IE file buffering can speed up web pages, it is also huge. This wastes a lot of hard disk space, so we can put all users' IE cache files in the same folder, which can save disk space and bring convenience to many users. When modifying, right-click IE icon, select Internet Properties command, and then open the Internet Properties dialog box. Find the item "Temporary Internet Files" in the "General" tab, click the "Settings" button to pop up the settings dialog box (as shown in Figure 4), click the "Move Folder" button in this folder, and then select the folder under the specified user. Subsequently, other users also modified according to this method.

(five) anytime, anywhere to extract documents:

1, involving folders:

My Documents: This folder is located in the user directory.

2. Folder function:

This folder is the "My Documents" folder commonly used by every user, and some of our files, data and so on are kept in this folder. By default, the program includes the following folders in My Documents:

My picture: store the user's picture file, and download the picture here by default.

My Music: Store users' music files. By default, music files will be saved here.

My Library: Store user library files.

My e-book: Store users' e-book files.

3. Application:

My Documents is located in each user's directory. If your computer uses multiple systems, it is a bit messy for each user to save files, and it is inconvenient to find files. In fact, we let multiple users use a "My Document" in the system and save all files in "My Document", which is very convenient for us to extract and modify files. When modifying, right-click the My Document icon on the desktop and select the Properties command to pop up the My Document Properties dialog box (as shown in Figure 5). Enter the path of the specified folder in the destination folder text box of this dialog box, and then click OK. Install this method to change other users' My Documents to this folder. In the future, every user can extract files from this folder at any time.

Third, personalized settings make the operation faster:

(1) Create your own program template:

1, involving folders:

Templates This folder is located under the user directory folder.

2. Folder function: This folder stores template files of commonly used programs, such as winword.doc, powerpnt.ppt, excel.xls, etc. A template is a style that contains elements such as paragraph structure, font style and page layout. It determines the basic structure of the document and the style of setting.

3. Application: After understanding the functions of templates, we can set a personalized template in this folder according to our own needs. When creating a new template, right-click the blank space of the folder, select "New →Microsoft Word Document" to create a new word file, rename it winword2.doc, double-click the file, and then make some personality settings for the font, font and page size, and save the file. Right-click in the browser, select the command "New →Microsoft Word Document", and then double-click the new document, and you will find that it has applied our settings in winword8.doc (as shown in Figure 6).

(2) Create personalized right-click sending function

1, involving folders:

SendTo: This folder is located under the user directory folder.

2. Folder function:

Send folder. The contents in this folder correspond to the contents in the "Send" item in the right mouse button menu. You can add or modify items in the Send menu of this folder.

3. Application: We can quickly process the specified file through the right-click send menu, such as sending to "My Document", quickly compressing the specified file, and quickly sending emails, which brings convenience to our usual operations. In fact, we can also copy the shortcuts of our commonly used folders (such as U disk) to SendTo, and then right-click the "Send to" command, and you can see that there is a drive letter of U disk under this menu (as shown in Figure 7). In this way, we can quickly send the specified file to the USB flash drive through the "Send" menu.

Fourth, lose weight through osmotic system.

In the Documents and settings folder, we can not only set the above items for users, but also use this folder to lose weight for the partition where the system is located.

(1) Move out

1. Move my documents and IE cache folders: In order to reduce the junk and fragmented files in the C partition, we can move some folders to other partitions, such as my documents, and this folder can be moved to the E disk or other partitions. We can also move IE's cache folder and OE mail folder to other partitions. When moving my documents and IE cache folders, we can just install the above methods. Let's see how to move OE mail folders.

2. Move OE storage folder: start OE, and click Options command under Tools menu in the main interface of the program to pop up the Options dialog box. Switch to the Maintenance tab and click the Storage Folder button (as shown in Figure 8). The program will pop up the mail storage path, and the default mail will be saved to c: \ documents and settings \ user name \ local settings. Application data \ identities \ {5146aedc-172e-4868-a96c-acc2cd223f2d} \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express, click the "Change" button to save the path to another partition. Restarting OE will take effect.

3. Moving temperature

The TEMP folder is located in the local settings under each user directory and is the temporary folder of the system. During the operation of the system and software, many temporary files will be generated and stored in this directory. In order to reduce the junk files on drive C, we can move it to other partitions. Right-click my computer when moving, select Properties to open the System Properties dialog box, switch to Advanced, click Environment Variables to open the Environment Variables window (as shown in Figure 9), select TEMP in User Variables, click Edit below, and enter variable values. In the future, temporary system files will be saved to the specified folder.

(2) liquidation of liquidation

1. Clean the temporary folder regularly.

Although the folders of Temp and Internet temporary files have been moved to other partitions, many temporary files will be kept in these folders over time, which takes up a lot of hard disk space, so we need to clean these folders regularly. When cleaning the temporary folder, we can directly enter the folder and delete the files in it. When cleaning up the Internet temporary files folder, we right-click the IE icon, select the Internet Properties command, and then pop up the Internet Properties dialog box, where we click the Delete File button, then select the Delete All Offline Content checkbox, and then click the OK button.

2. Clean up the online history regularly.

The history of surfing the Internet every time is saved in the local settings directory of each user directory located in the Documents and Settings folder. After a long time, there are many useless websites here, which need to be cleaned regularly. When cleaning, click the Clean History button in the Internet Properties dialog box to clear the history in this folder.

Tip: History folder. IE browser has a function of recording websites visited by users, and this directory is used to store these websites.

Five, make the system more secure:

Documents and Settings folder is a folder used by users to store user configuration information, which often reveals some privacy.

(a) Don't let cookies leak:

Cookies, also called cookies, are some information left on the hard disk when you browse some websites, including user name, user information, website address and so on. This folder is located in each user directory of the Documents and Settings folder. Therefore, we can clean up the files in these folders to ensure the security of the data. Cleaning is to click the "Delete cookie" button in the "Internet Properties" dialog box to download the cookie information in this folder.

(2) Set special folders for important files in Win XP.

If there are many users in Win XP, for security reasons, we can set some folders as personal folders, and others can't view and change the contents in private folders. However, before using this feature, your drive partition format must be NTFS format.

Open My Computer, and then double-click the Documents and Settings folder of drive C to select the specified user folder. Right-click any folder in the user profile and select the "Properties" command from the pop-up right-click menu. Select the * * * Enjoy tab in the pop-up window, and select the "Make this folder private" check box. The private folder is set successfully.

(3) Retrieve temporary disk files:

When the computer is in use, it often crashes because of power failure and other phenomena, which makes the files that we can't archive in Word flow to the east and affects our work. In fact, the word document will be stored in C: \ Documents and Settings \ User Name \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Word before we save it, so when you restart the computer, you will find a file named XXX.asd, which is the file you just typed hard. We can rename it XXX.doc, open this file in Word, and see if the file you typed just now appears again.

Six, timely data backup

Before installing the program in the system, some necessary programs or systems in the system should be set up accordingly, such as favorites and IE cache files. So it is very troublesome to reset them if the system is down or reinstalled. In order to reduce repeated operations, these settings can be backed up after system setup to avoid accidents.

(a) backup application data folder:

Application data is an application data folder. In the documents and settings folder, each user corresponds to an application data folder. Because each user uses different software, the contents of the directory are also different. Including shortcuts in the taskbar, some files of input method and so on. According to the software used in your system, the contents in this directory are different. Therefore, in order to facilitate the system installation, we can back up the related items in this folder before installing the new system.

(2) Backup start menu:

If you install some programs in other partitions after installing the system, many programs can be used directly after installing the system, such as winzip and windows Optimizer, but these programs lack shortcuts in the start menu, so we can back up and start before installing the system.

(3) backup the registry file:

Every time we install the system, we need to optimize the system settings. These settings are saved in the registry file. Those three documents, Ntuze. DAT, ntuser.ini and ntuser.dat.LOG are part of the registry file, which will affect individual users. Store the application settings of Explorer, user settings in taskbar, network printer, control panel and attachment settings (including calculator, clock, notepad, HyperTerminal, etc.). ). So we can back up these three files in other partitions.

How, through the above introduction, you have a further understanding of documents and setting folders, which brings us a lot of convenience in optimizing the system?
