Zhejiang University Library is one of the oldest university libraries in China. Its predecessor was Qiushi College Library, which was built in 1897. 1September, 1998, the former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University were merged into the new Zhejiang University, and the library was also merged with other schools to form a unified Zhejiang University library. The newly-built basic branch library and medical branch library in Zijingang Campus were completed and opened in June 2003 and June 2006 respectively. At present, there are 5 buildings in the library, with a total construction area of 86,000 square meters and 5,282 reading seats. The library is rich in books and complete in categories, covering almost all disciplines, especially mechanical engineering and instruments, electric power, electronic science and engineering, chemistry, medicine, agriculture, biological sciences, local literature, Dunhuang studies, psychology and other disciplines.
The library of Zhejiang University now consists of a main library and five branch libraries. The main library is located in the library building of Yuquan Campus, and its branches are Science and Technology Branch (Yuquan Campus), Arts and Sciences Branch (Xixi Campus), Agriculture Branch (Huajiachi Campus), Medicine Branch (Zijingang Campus) and Basic Branch (Zijingang Campus). The collections and services of each branch library have different disciplinary and professional characteristics. The "Ni Tiecheng Humanities Library" of Zhejiang University donated by Hong Kong industrialist Mr. Ni Tiecheng and the "Yuan's Engineering Library" specially established to thank Dr. Yuan Shaowen, a Chinese-American scientist, for donating to Zhejiang University were set up in Yuquan Campus Branch.
The library of Zhejiang University is rich in books and complete in categories. The total collection of books is 5.53 million volumes (pieces). At present, there are 654.38 million new books and nearly 7,500 printed periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. By the end of 2003, there were about 765,438+0,000 books and 2.93 million books in China, about 400,000 books in foreign languages and 723,000 books, about 20,000 Chinese periodicals and 355,000 books (bound volumes), about 20,000 foreign periodicals and 820,000 books (bound volumes), as well as books, audio-visual materials and microforms.
