1928 founded the school in Beijing, and 1938 moved to Lanzhou. It was renamed Lanzhou No.28 Middle School, and the name of "Lanzhou Northwest Middle School" was restored after 1990. In 2023, it coincides with the 95th anniversary of the founding of Northwest Middle School.

Northwest Middle School in Lanzhou is one of the 10 provincial demonstration high schools directly under the Municipal Education Bureau. It is also one of the two provincial demonstration high schools in Qilihe area at present, and it is the lead school in running schools jointly with ordinary high schools in Qilihe area and Lanzhou New District. In recent years, the school has been rated as a civilized campus in the whole province, a moral education model school in the whole province, a model school governing schools according to law in the whole city, a home-school education base school in the whole city, and an advanced collective in the whole city's education system.
