School of Mathematics is located in the south campus of Guangzhou Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. Its predecessor, the Department of Mathematics, was founded in 1924. The college has three departments, namely, Mathematics Department, Statistical Science Department, Scientific Computing and Computer Application Department, and five research institutions, namely, Mathematics Institute, Computational Science Laboratory (key in Guangdong Province), Computational Science and Computer Application Institute, Complex System Research Center and South China Statistical Science Research Center. Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Applied Mathematics Research Center, a national platform, was built by our institute.

The college has a strong faculty, balanced discipline distribution, high academic level and reasonable age structure. Jiang Lifu, a famous mathematician and "father of modern mathematics", has taught here for a long time. As of June 2002 1 year, there are 92 professional teachers in the college, including 33 professors, 52 associate professors, 3 assistant professors1person, 3 senior lecturers and 3 full-time teachers, and more than 95% of them have doctoral degrees. There are 7 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and the leading talent of the Central Organization Department 1 person.

1 person was selected as the first-class and second-class talents of "100 million talents project" in Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, 1 person was selected as the national candidate of "100 million talents project in the new century" in Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, 9 outstanding talents in the new century, 1 outstanding young talents in the Central Organization Department, 5 winners of National Excellent Youth Fund, 1 Pearl River scholar in Guangdong Province and 4 in Guangdong Province.
