TOEFL comes from the United States and is generally aimed at the exams that foreign students studying in the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries need to pass (IELTS scores in Australia are equally recognized, and some schools in Canada recognize IELTS).
The GRE profile is as follows:
Candidates who plan to go to the graduate schools of universities and colleges in the United States or Canada for further study or apply for graduate students need to provide TOFFL test scores, and most institutions require candidates to provide GRE (Graduate Entrance Examination) scores. GRE exams are held in many parts of the world every year, sponsored by the Education Examinations Service Center (ETS). China Foreign Examination Coordination Office is responsible for managing and undertaking foreign examinations such as GRE.
GRE test is divided into general test or aptitude test and subtest or advanced test. General proficiency test is to test candidates' basic English ability and the breadth and depth of English knowledge; Among them, the quantitative part is to test the potential ability of candidates in basic mathematics, as well as their understanding and judgment of mathematical and physical problems; Analytic logic diagram is to test the examinee's ability to analyze or logically reason problems. The purpose of professional testing is mainly to test the knowledge, skills and abilities of candidates in a certain discipline or professional field.
The content of GRE exam can be roughly divided into three parts:
Speech part: antonym, analogy, sentence completion and reading test. This part has a wide range of contents, including astronomy, geography, humanities, science, art, politics and history.
Quantitative part: all basic problems in mathematics, including geometry, algebra, statistical charts, intelligence tests and so on. The main purpose is to understand the thinking, understanding, reasoning and reaction ability of candidates. The difficulty and depth of the topic sometimes depend on the examinee's understanding of the description and explanation of the topic.
Analysis part: first, analysis and explanation, such indirect questions generally need to be answered according to the situation and results given in the question; The other is logical diagram, some of which infer their relationships according to their meanings, and find out the correct relationship diagram among the five affiliated relationship diagrams. Another part is to infer the relationship between them according to the content of their essays.
Since1June, 1999 10, GRE has been changed to computer test all over the world. After GRE was changed to computer test, there are still three parts, but the time has changed. The amount of questions and time allocation are as follows:
part
Number of questions (unit)
Time (minutes)
Verbal
30
30
scalar
25
40
analytic
35
60
In the actual exam, in addition to the three sections listed above, the computer will also generate a section, which may be any of the three sections. The topics in this section are not scored, and are purely for ETS inspection. But because ETS won't tell you which section is not included in the total score, you should still complete all the exam questions honestly. Some candidates will encounter another paragraph, and ETS will tell you that this part of the topic is purely an investigation and will not be included in the score, like this.
Computer-based examination has increased the examination time of mathematics and analysis, which have always been the strengths of China candidates, so this reform is definitely a good thing for China candidates. However, the introduction of computers will also bring a lot to students who are unfamiliar with computers, such as not marking articles when reading, pressing scroll bars when scanning up and down, and so on. But these can be overcome through usual training.
Another feature of computer-based examination is intelligence, that is, the computer will adjust the difficulty of the next question according to the correctness of the previous question. The score of the question varies according to the difficulty, and may differ by as much as 10 times at most. Moreover, the difficulty of each question is increased separately, and the difficulty of analogy will not affect the difficulty of reading. The difficulty of reading is to adjust the difficulty of the following questions according to the correct situation of the previous questions.
Generally speaking, if candidates do well in the exam, they will find it more and more difficult. On the other hand, if you get better and better, your grades are mostly unsatisfactory, but it is also related to the difficulty of the previous questions. If there are too few mistakes in the initial questions, in order not to let your score exceed 2400, the computer will choose some simple questions for candidates to do.
ETS will send an official to each test center every three months, select the part of the test questions that frequently appear in a period of time, delete them, and then add the same number of new test questions to the computer. Therefore, there is no possibility that more people will take the exam and all the questions will be clarified.
The scoring method of the general ability test is: first, record the number of correct answers in each part to get the original score, that is, give one point for answering a question correctly and add it, then convert the original score into a scale score according to the score conversion table of the GRF general ability test, and then add the ratios of each department in stages to get the total score. The GRE general ability test has a full score of 2400, and all parts (language ability, mathematical ability and analytical ability) have a full score of 800. The minimum score for each part is 200 points, that is, candidates can get 200 points if they don't answer one question or all the answers are wrong. Most graduate schools in the United States require applicants to score 65,438+065,438+000 ~ 65,438+0200 (65,438+065,438+000 ~ 65,438+0200) in the general proficiency test. Most graduate schools only need candidates to provide these two.
The report card of GRE general ability test not only lists the ratio scores and total scores of some questions, but also lists the percentile ranking of these scores among all candidates. For example, a candidate's score in the math part of the GRE general ability test is 85%, which means that if 100 people take the test, 84 of them are worse than the candidate, and 15 people are better than the candidate. In addition, the GRE report card also uses the cumulative scoring method, that is, in addition to telling the candidates the results of this exam, if the candidates have taken many GRE exams in the last five years, the report card will also include the candidates' exams in the past five years (exam date, category and results). Therefore, it is best to pass the GRE exam once!
The GRE test results are valid for 5 years, and candidates can send additional transcripts according to ETS requirements within 5 years after the test, so that ETS can send the results to designated institutions.
