UK 1 1+ Test: What are GL and CEM?
1. What is GL or CEM?

In short, GL and CEM are two different examination committees. In the "junior high school" entrance examination of private middle schools all over the UK, GL or CEM examination questions are basically adopted. Although the subjects covered by these two types of exams are basically the same, they are all English, mathematics, literal logical reasoning and graphic logical reasoning (three-dimensional space imagination exercise). However, the "proposition method" of GL and CEM in the 1 1+ exam is quite different, which will directly affect how you help your child prepare for the 1 1+ exam.

2. What is the GL or CEM exam? What are the differences in their proposition ideas?

The name GL was renamed by NFER in 2007, which is the abbreviation of "granda Learning" educational institution. At present, well-known key middle schools in Britain basically adopt GL examination system.

CEM 1 1+ exam was developed by the Education Evaluation and Monitoring Center of Durham University. Its purpose is to meet the concerns raised by some key middle schools. These middle schools believe that the current 1 1+ examination system has become extremely transparent. This transparent examination system will lead teachers and students to fall into the mode of "teaching skills and brushing a lot of questions". It violates the original intention of school education to "cultivate children's ability to find and solve problems". Therefore, once CEM was launched, it was welcomed by some schools. CEM emphasizes the role of "teachers' guidance". They have not issued or recommended any kind of exercise books. CEM exam will constantly change the problem-setting mode and increase the difficulty appropriately. CEM declared that "CEM exam can be passed not by brushing questions, but by examining students' real academic level".

3. Areas currently covered by Germany or CEM

Areas where GL is adopted: Dorset, Kent, Lancashire and cambria, Lincolnshire, Medway, Northern Ireland and Wiltshire.

CEM was adopted by homeless people in Berkshire, bexley, Birmingham, Buckinghamshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Walsall, Warwickshire, Willard and wolverhampton wanderers.

Areas where GL and CEM coexist: Devon, Essex, Hertfordshire, Trafford and Yorkshire.

At the same time, parents should pay attention to the fact that the final examination mode adopted by each school is not immutable, so please log in to the target school official website to confirm the examination form before preparing for the exam.

4. Examination subjects in Germany or CEM

GL: The examination content includes English, mathematics, literal logical reasoning and graphic logical reasoning. The format of the test paper is basically the same as that in China, and the standard test questions are adopted, that is, the correct answers are written in the blanks next to the questions. There are also schools that require answers to be used on the "answer sheet". The length of the test paper can also be slightly different, and most of the test time is set at 45 minutes.

The proposition of GL is extracted from the "GL question bank", and the school can choose the examination subjects independently in English, mathematics, literal logical reasoning and graphic logical reasoning. For example, in Dorset, schools choose to test mathematics, English and literal logical reasoning. In Lincolnshire, the school only takes two tests: literal logical reasoning and graphic logical reasoning.

CEM:CEM exam covers English, numerical reasoning, literal logic reasoning and graphic logic reasoning. In fact, some of the contents involved in CEM's Logical Reasoning of Words have already been involved in the "English" subject of GL exam, including reading comprehension. In addition, the mathematical core skills examined by' digital reasoning' are also reflected in the GL exam.

Whether it is logical reasoning or numerical reasoning, the examination standards of CEM are closer to the teaching requirements of KS2 (Grade 4-6) in the national syllabus. Similarly, different regions and schools can choose their own examination subjects.

5. the difference between 5.GL and CEM exam subjects.

GL: The four test subjects are independent. Students can be familiar with such specific problems and solutions through practice and preparation.

CEM: The characteristic of the exam is that four subjects can be mixed in two papers. English+literal logical reasoning, mathematical reasoning+graphic logical reasoning. Specifically, it is up to the school to decide whether to divide it into four papers, or to mix them into two papers, or to mix them separately.

In addition, the layout of CEM test paper may switch short-term questions, long-term questions and logical reasoning graphics questions on the same test paper quickly and disorderly. This requires students to have good time allocation and control ability.

In CEM test, the number of questions is greater than the average problem-solving speed of normal students, and the proportion of subject combinations in each test paper is irregular. Therefore, it is difficult to predict children's test scores before the exam.

6. Knowledge required for 6.GL or CEM exam

GL: Large vocabulary, logical reasoning ability, mathematical ability and spelling ability are the necessary foundations.

CEM: Solid English literature ability, comprehension ability, vocabulary, spelling and mathematical operation ability are the necessary foundation. Among them, the logical reasoning questions of CEM are very different from those of GL, and the success depends on the breadth and depth of children's vocabulary.

7. How to help children prepare for the 1 1+ exam?

First, decide what you want to take in your favorite school.

Schools and regions are different. Please note that the school may change the examination method, that is, switch between GL and CEM. Therefore, it is very necessary to save information in time. At the same time, we should not only look at which exam form is adopted, but also look at the exam subjects, exam forms, exam duration and whether there is an extra exam. (such as creative writing).

Second, if your child's favorite school adopts the GL exam model, please urge your child to do a lot of exercises and understand all the exam subjects. (Of course, a lot of practice is also very important for the CEM exam, but in the real exam, the types of questions may be very different from those practiced by students. )

Thirdly, if your child's favorite school adopts the CEM test mode, please urge your child to try to increase his vocabulary from breadth to depth. Especially synonyms and antonyms, such as using complex words to describe things. Or do more word fill-in-the-blank games

Fourth, time management ability is very important for both kinds of exams, especially CEM exam!

A. Please make sure that the child has done a lot of exercises and can control the time well.

B. Give the child a mock test.

C. explain the exam skills. I believe that almost all parents in China have experienced many battles.

1 1+ exam is to test children's own talents and specialties, so reading a lot, accumulating vocabulary and improving math skills are the key ways to help children prepare for the exam. As a matter of fact, according to China's idea of "the road to simplicity", no matter what kind of examination form, it is to examine students' real academic basic ability. These basic skills will directly affect children's future study, and laying a good foundation is the last word to win.
