American College Students' Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM/ICM) is an international competition and the originator of all kinds of mathematical modeling competitions. Starting from 1985, it was jointly sponsored by the American Natural Science Foundation and the American Mathematics and Mathematics Application Association.

The only international modeling competition co-organized by many international organizations such as the American Institute of Operations Research, the Institute of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Mathematical Society. The competition requires less than 3 undergraduates to solve a specific social engineering problem with mathematical modeling and other knowledge within 4 days and submit their papers in English.

In 20021year, 26 1 12 teams (MCM 10053, ICM 16059) from many countries and regions including Cambridge University participated in the competition.

* * * Award 36 outstanding winners (the winning rate is about 0.13%); There are 13 champion prizes (the winning rate is about 0.04%), and only four COMAP and SIAM champions have been won at the same time.

Development history

1985 established an annual university-level competition named "Mathematical Competition in Modeling" (MCM) with the support of the American Science Foundation.

The purpose of MCM is to encourage university teachers and students to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to various practical problems with uncertain scope. Through this structure, teachers and students are encouraged to actively participate, and the process of building a complete model is emphasized.

This is a completely open game. Only a few practical problems from any field are unlimited every year. Students take part in the competition in groups of three, choose a problem within four days, and complete the whole process of mathematical modeling of practical problems.

And write a paper on the restatement, simplification and hypothesis of the problem and its rationality, the establishment and solution of the mathematical model (and software), the test and improvement of the model, the advantages and disadvantages of the model and the self-evaluation of its possible application scope.

A review team composed of experts will review outstanding papers and give some rewards. Its prohibition is that during the competition, it is forbidden to discuss the competition topic with anyone outside the team (including the instructor), but you can use any books, online materials, any type of computer and software, etc. It provides a broad space for participating students to give full play to their creativity.
