The school has characteristic classes of innovative talents training such as "science base class", "science and technology class" and "experimental class", and actively explores the training mode of top-notch innovative talents. Schools range from the national "National Basic Science Research and Teaching Talents Training Base Class" to school-level experimental classes such as biological science, computer science and technology, electronic information engineering, and from minority science and technology classes to the "characteristic training plan" of the autonomous region, involving many majors and types of arts and sciences. Students are mainly selected from freshmen, set up a separate talent training plan, pay attention to practice and scientific research and innovation ability, carefully equip teachers and professional tutors, provide high-quality teaching resources and formulate various preferential policies.

This year, the mechanical engineering major of Xinjiang University continues to recruit undergraduates from all provinces (cities, districts) and jointly train them with Xi Jiaotong University. After enrollment, students study in Xinjiang University for the first two years, and then study in Xi Jiaotong University for the second two years and complete their graduation thesis (design). After students enter school, they adopt a rolling management mode. Students who go to Xi Jiaotong University are selected and determined according to their performance in the first two years after their admission. The fees for jointly training students are collected by Xinjiang University in the first two years and by Xi Jiaotong University in the last two years. The training plan was jointly formulated by Xinjiang University and Xi Jiaotong University. Graduation certificate and bachelor's degree certificate are issued by Xinjiang University, stamped with the seals of Xinjiang University and Xi Jiaotong University, and marked as joint training of the two universities.
