Suzhou Institute of Science and Technology, the predecessor of the school, was formed by the merger of Suzhou Institute of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection and Suzhou Railway Teachers College, and was established in September 20001year. The former Suzhou Institute of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection was established in 1983 directly under the Ministry of Construction (the former Suzhou Institute of Architecture and Engineering was established in 1953).

Suzhou Railway Teachers College was established in 1980 (Suzhou Railway Middle School was established in 195 1). In 2000, the subordinate relationship between the two schools was placed under Jiangsu Province at the same time, and the school management system of "combining the central and local governments and giving priority to local management" was implemented. On March 20 16, the school was renamed Suzhou University of Science and Technology.
