Chen Shengshen was born in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province on1October 28th, 19 1 165438. 1922 The whole family moved to Tianjin.
At the beginning of 1923, Chen Shengshen was admitted to Tianjin Rotary Middle School (now Tianjin Railway No.1 Middle School). 1926 was admitted to Nankai University and taught by Professor Jiang Lifu. Chen Shengshen recalled: "I was engaged in geometry, and I mostly lost my university teacher, Dr. Jiang Lifu."
1June, 930, Chen Shengshen received a bachelor of science degree from Nankai University. At that time, he was admitted to the Department of Computing, School of Science, Tsinghua University Graduate School. During his study in Tsinghua University, Professor W blaschke of Hamburg University gave a series of speeches, which strengthened his confidence in joining mathematics. He once said: "Professor blaschke has a great influence on me, so I can't say too much."
1934 10, Chen Shengshen entered the University of Hamburg sponsored by Tsinghua University, and studied geometry under Professor blaschke. In the autumn of 1935, I finished the paper on the network calculation of R-dimensional manifold in 2r-dimensional space and the theory of triple network invariance. In February, 1936, Chen Shengshen was awarded a doctorate with "excellent" comprehensive evaluation results.
1September, 936, Chen Shengshen went to the University of Paris to do research work, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Sorbonne China Foundation in Paris, France, and studied under the international geometry master E. Gadang.
From 65438 to 0937, Chen Shengshen returned to China as a professor of mathematics at the invitation of Tsinghua University. In July, Chen Shengshen left Paris for new york, USA, and visited Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. When Japanese imperialism launched a full-scale war of aggression against China, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University were ordered to set up temporary universities in Changsha, Hunan Province, and Chen Shengshen went there immediately.
In February, she held an engagement ceremony with Zheng Shining, the daughter of Tsinghua University mathematics professor Zheng.
1938 65438+ 10, Changsha Temporary University moved to Kunming and changed its name to National Southwest Associated University. During his stay in The National SouthWest Associated University, he was full of patriotic enthusiasm, and tried to stay in the front line of teaching. He held a seminar on Li Qun with China and Wang Zhuxi, and trained many outstanding students, including later famous mathematicians such as Yan Zhida, Yan Zhida, Yan Wang Hao and others. Chen Shengshen later said: "It is my lucky life to be educated by talents in the world."
1In July, 943, Chen Shengshen went to the United States at the invitation of Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. At that time, Princeton was a world-famous mathematical center, and the Institute of Advanced Studies created Princeton's grand academic reputation because of famous masters such as Einstein and Van Buren, which had a great influence on Chen.
During the period of 1943+00, Chen Shengshen finished the paper "A Simple Proof of Gauss-bonet Formula of Closed Riemannian Manifolds", which was his most proud work in his life.
1In September, 945, the American Mathematical Society held a summer meeting, and Chen Shengshen was invited to give an hour's speech. In his lecture entitled "Some new ideas about large-scale differential geometry", he systematically expounded his theoretical method of inheriting the fiber bundle developed by E. Cartan, which aroused strong repercussions in academic circles and was called "the arrival of a new era of global differential geometry". 10 June, I finished my thesis "Characteristic Classes of Hermite Manifolds". This is another important work, in which the invariants now called "Chen Class" are put forward, which lays the foundation for global differential geometry. With the above achievements, Chen Shengshen became the undisputed leader in the field of international differential geometry.
1945 12, Chen Shengshen returned to China, and soon he took part in the preparatory work for the Institute of Mathematics of Academia Sinica. After the establishment of the Institute of Mathematics, he served as acting director and taught a group of mathematicians who became famous later, such as Wu Wenjun. 1948, Chen Shengshen was elected as an academician of Academia Sinica. 1949 Professor of Geometry, Department of Mathematics, University of Chicago.
1950, he was invited to give a speech entitled "differential geometry of fiber bundles" at the1/international congress of mathematicians held in Cambridge, USA, and differential geometry was widely recognized internationally.
1960 was employed by the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked for about 20 years, making it the center of geometry and topology research.
196 1 became an American citizen and was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Sciences in the same year. 1963 was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences. 198 1 is the first director of the national institute of mathematics, and 1984 is the honorary director. 1983, he won the Steele Prize of the American Mathematical Society in recognition of his "long-term influence on the whole mathematical work". 1984, won the International Wolff Prize in Mathematics for his "profound contribution to the whole differential geometry and influenced the whole mathematics".
1980, at the suggestion and organization of Chen Shengshen, the first "International Conference on Differential Geometry and Differential Equations" was held in Beijing. He personally led the American delegation to attend the conference.
1995 was elected as the first foreign academician of China Academy of Sciences.
In 2002, with Chen Shengshen's suggestion and efforts, the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in Beijing. Chen Shengshen was elected honorary president of the conference and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.
1985, after more than 20 years of unremitting efforts, Chen Shengshen established Nankai Institute of Mathematics. He accepted the invitation of the Ministry of Education and became the first director.
At the beginning of 2000, Chen Shengshen made it clear that "I chose to settle in Tianjin because I wanted to do more work in my lifetime". June 5438 +2000 10, Tianjin granted him permanent residency.
Chen Shengshen enjoys a high academic reputation in the world. He is a member of Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Seetanah Academy in Biloch, Italy, a member of American Academy of Philosophy, a lifelong honorary member of New York Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of Italian Linchenko Academy of Sciences, French Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Sciences, an honorary member of Indian Mathematical Society and London Mathematical Society, a foreign member of British Royal Society and a member of American Philosophical Society. He is a founding member of the Third World Academy of Sciences.
Chen Shengshen is recognized as a "great geometer in the 20th century", and has also won the National Science Medal, the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award and the first Shaw Prize (Mathematical Science Award). In 2004, the International Asteroid Center named the asteroid 1998CS2 as "Chen Shengshen Star".
Chen Shengshen is also honorary doctor of Nankai University, Zhejiang University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Berlin University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, honorary doctor of law of Chinese University of Hong Kong, honorary doctor of science of University of Chicago and University of Hamburg, honorary doctor of mathematics of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, honorary professor of Peking University, Institute of Systems of China Academy of Sciences, etc. 10, graduate school of China Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mathematics of China Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, honorary curator of Tianjin Science and Technology Museum.
