The role of mathematics
Frankly speaking, most people don't really need to be proficient in mathematics. You don't even need multiplication and division to cope with daily life, just add and subtract. Life in the modern world has even been simplified to the point that people don't need to have any intersection with mathematics in most cases except paying attention to the numbers in bank accounts, the hands of clocks and watches and keeping their age secret.
People don't need mathematical formulas to guide their lives, nor do they need mathematical ideas to enrich their souls. Most people can live as long as they follow inertia, and many people can live fully, and it seems that they don't need to rely on mathematical tools to achieve all this.
Since mathematics has no obvious help to our daily life, it seems no harm not to know mathematics. Learning mathematics is a hard job, and learning it well is even more difficult. Spending a lot of time learning math well may not bring much benefit to life. In the eyes of the public, this is undoubtedly a thankless and stupid effort.
