The American College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM/ICM), sponsored by the American Federation of Mathematics and Its Applications, is the only international mathematical modeling competition and the most influential mathematical modeling competition in the world. The content of the competition involves many fields such as economy, management, environment, resources, ecology, medicine and safety.
The competition requires 3 people (both undergraduate and graduate students can participate) to complete all the work from modeling, solving and verifying the specified problem to writing the paper within 4 days, which reflects the ability of the contestants to study problems and solutions and the spirit of teamwork. He is the originator of all kinds of mathematical modeling competitions today.
Development history:
1985, with the support of the American Science Foundation, an annual university-level competition named "Mathematical Competition in Modeling" was founded. The purpose of MCM is to encourage university teachers and students to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to various practical problems with uncertain scope. Through this structure, teachers and students are encouraged to actively participate, and the process of building a complete model is emphasized.
This is a completely open game. Only a few practical problems from any field are unlimited every year. Students take part in the competition in groups of three, choose a problem within four days, complete the whole process of mathematical modeling of practical problems, and write a paper on the restatement, simplification, hypothesis and rationality of the problem, the establishment and solution of the mathematical model (and software), the test and improvement, the advantages and disadvantages of the model and the self-evaluation of its possible application scope.
A review team composed of experts will review outstanding papers and give some rewards. It has only one prohibition, that is, it is not allowed to discuss the topic of the competition with anyone outside the team (including the instructor) during the competition, but you can use any books, information on the Internet, any type of computer and software, etc. It provides a broad space for participating students to give full play to their creativity.
In the first MCM, there were 90 teams from 70 universities in the United States, up to 1992, and 292 teams from 189 universities in the United States and other countries. According to the organizer's announcement, the 20 19 Mathematical Modeling Competition for American College Students attracted 25,370 teams from 7 countries and regions around the world, including the United States and China, and it has become an international competition with extremely wide influence.
