Application Notes of Mathematics and Philosophy in Oxford University (Edition 20 19)
This course combines two basic and widely applicable knowledge and skills. Mathematical knowledge and the ability to use mathematical knowledge are the most important means to solve quantitative problems, while philosophical training enhances the ability to analyze problems, question accepted assumptions and clearly express understanding.

I. Application conditions

1. High school diploma

China applicants, even if they have college entrance examination results, cannot replace the high school diploma, and must submit them.

2. English requirements

3. Other test score requirements

A-levels: mathematics and advanced mathematics require A * A * A and A * s and above. For those students whose advanced mathematics does not reach A-level, we also accept that mathematics reaches A * AAa and A *, and the advanced mathematics is A or A * AA and A *.

IB course: 39 points (including core points) (6 points, 6 points and 7 points in 3 subjects of Advanced Level Examination) or any other equivalent education (please refer to other British education and international qualification certificates). Candidates are expected to have mathematics A-level (A * level), advanced (A-level) and advanced international diploma level (7 points) or other equivalent level. We hope that you have accepted and passed any practical part of your chosen science subject. As part of the application, all candidates must also take the entrance examination for mathematics.

Second, how to apply

Written test: All candidates must take the math joint test in their own school or university or other recognized test center on Wednesday, 2018103/kloc-0. Candidates must ensure that they can take the exam now. This exam needs to be registered separately, and the final deadline is Monday 20 18 10 15. Candidates have the responsibility to ensure that they sign up for this exam. We strongly recommend that the time be fully arranged before the deadline. More information about all our written tests can be found on our test page, and more information about MAT can be found on the Math Adaptability Test website.

Written assignment: You don't need to submit any written assignment when applying for this course.

The tutor has something to say: in the philosophy interview, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate the critical and analytical methods of abstract problems and the ability to defend your views through reasonable argumentation. In math, you may find yourself being asked to look at some problems that you have never seen before. Don't worry, we will help you! We want to see if you can respond to suggestions on how to deal with new things instead of simply finding out what you have taught. For more detailed information about the selection criteria of this course, please refer to the website of Mathematics and Philosophy.

Third, the course introduction

This combination provides a strong background for you to enter the postgraduate study of mathematics or philosophy or engage in diversified careers. Historically, there is a close relationship between mathematics and philosophy. As an important branch of these two themes, logic provides a natural bridge for mathematical philosophy. The degree is based on the belief that parallel research in these related disciplines can significantly improve your understanding of each discipline.

The School of Philosophy at Oxford University is the largest in Britain and one of the largest in the world. It has more than 70 full-time members and accepts about 450 undergraduate students to study various degrees in philosophy every year. Many faculty members enjoy a world reputation, and the research rating of teachers is the highest among all philosophy departments in Britain. Philosophy library is one of the best libraries in this country. A large number of undergraduate and graduate students read philosophy through various other disciplines, which provides opportunities to participate in a diversified and lively philosophy community. Since 20 13, the Department of Mathematics has been located in andrew willis Building, which is one of the largest and best in Britain, including many world-class research groups. This is reflected in the math topics you can choose, especially in the fourth year. Students interested in this course can also consider other math courses or computer science and philosophy.

There are two degrees in mathematics and philosophy, three-year bachelor's degree and four-year master's degree in mathematics and computer science. The decision to extend it to the fourth year need not be made before the third year. The math units in this joint course all come from a single math course. Therefore, the mathematics standards for taking joint courses are the same as those for taking single mathematics courses. The compulsory core mathematics of the joint course includes pure mathematics (as opposed to applied mathematics), which is the compulsory core of a single mathematics course. Most of the philosophy units in the courses of mathematics and philosophy are shared with other joint courses of philosophy.

In the first year, all parts of the course are compulsory. In the second and third years, some subjects are compulsory, including core mathematics and philosophy, and bridge papers between mathematical philosophy and foundation (logic and set theory), but you can also choose options. In the fourth year, there are no compulsory subjects, and you can complete all mathematics, all philosophy or a combination of both.

1 level and level 2: at most 10 lectures per week, twice a week.
