Introduction to GRE

Basic profile

GRE, 1937, was first jointly organized by four American universities, namely Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Princeton. Initially undertaken by Carnegie Foundation, 1948 was handed over to the newly established education examination center ETS. Since then, it has been held in many parts of the world every year. China Foreign Examination Coordination Office is responsible for the centralized management and undertaking of foreign examinations such as GRE in China.

Some famous American universities regard GRE scores as "recommended scores": I hope that applicants can provide this score, regardless of whether their undergraduate majors are the same as their own graduate majors, but this is not a necessary condition. At this time, if you can provide special GRE scores, it is very beneficial to apply for scholarships. Therefore, if the applicant has enough time, he might as well take a special exam. An excellent GRE score can reflect the applicant's professional quality and learning potential. GRE unified examination is a necessary examination for applying for postgraduate entrance examination. For graduate students applying for law or business, LSAT or GMAT is used to replace the GRE general exam. Now American universities don't have as high a demand for the sense of substitution of grades as before. Many schools can provide any scores of GRE or GMAT as the scores that business graduate students should provide, and law graduate students also use GRE scores instead of LSAT scores.

Training institutions

With the increase of international students, gre training institutions are gradually increasing. Among them, Beijing New Oriental School has 17 years of training experience, accounting for 70% of the national overseas training market and training 450,000 students annually. With rich teaching experience and cutting-edge teaching materials, help students overcome the difficulties of GRE and enter famous American schools.

Domestic examination form

At present, Chinese mainland, Hongkong, Macau and South Korea implement separate examinations. It consists of computer test (analytical writing) and written test (Chinese and mathematics).

Examination forms in other regions

In addition to the above-mentioned examination fields mainly in Chinese mainland, computer-based examinations (analytical writing, Chinese, mathematics) are currently implemented.

Edit the application scope of GRE in this paragraph.

GRE (Postgraduate Entrance Examination) is suitable for postgraduate examinations in various disciplines and majors except law (LSAT) and business (GMAT). There are two kinds of GRE tests (usually general tests): general tests or sexual orientation tests; Professional test or advanced test (subject test or advanced test). Candidates need to take one or two exams according to their own conditions and the requirements of the school they are applying for. The purpose of general examination is to measure the general potential ability of candidates to engage in academic research at the advanced stage according to the basic knowledge and ability level of university graduates, and does not involve any special requirements of any major. The purpose of professional examination is to test the knowledge, skills and abilities of candidates in a certain discipline or professional field.

In this section, edit the latest reform and change of GRE test.

brief introduction

ETS will launch the new GRE test on August 20th11. This examination reform focuses on three aspects: 1. Test content 2. Exam Form 3. The scoring method will be discussed from three aspects:

writing

The writing part will focus on the examinee's ability to respond to specific questions, rather than asking the examinee to pile up general words. Specifically, these key abilities include: clarifying complex viewpoints clearly and effectively; Support the viewpoint with appropriate facts and examples; Investigate/verify other people's arguments and related arguments; Support targeted and coherent discussions; And in the writing part of standard written English, we should control logical reasoning and analytical writing skills, and increase efforts to introduce questions that require candidates to make targeted responses, so as to reduce the possibility of candidates relying on materials prepared in advance (such as recitation).

Chinese

The investigation of language ability will put more emphasis on advanced cognitive ability, and strive to reflect the examinee's understanding of reading materials and the application of reasoning ability more deeply and truly. Specifically, these abilities include: analyzing a text and drawing conclusions; Derived from incomplete data; Determine the author's premises/assumptions and opinions; Understand the multi-level meaning of language and words, including literal meaning, rhetorical meaning and author's intention. Choose important points of view, and distinguish between major texts and minor/related texts; Summarize the full text; Understand the structure of the article and the meaning of words, sentences and paragraphs; Understanding the relationship between different words and concepts emphasizes complex reasoning ability, highlights advanced cognitive skills and more context-based understanding, such as reading comprehension, reduces the investigation of the meaning of simple words (obtained by rote memorization), cancels analogies and antonyms, expands the choice of new questions and skills in the article, selects a sentence from the article and increases the number of answers.

mathematics

The mathematics part still pays attention to the same mathematical concepts as before, but it will introduce more life scenes and highlight the examination of candidates' ability to interpret numbers. The abilities that mathematics focuses on include reading quantitative information, interpreting and analyzing quantitative information, solving problems by using mathematical models, emphasizing quantitative reasoning ability by using basic concepts and skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and probability statistics, improving the ratio of life scene questions to data interpretation questions, providing online calculators to reduce the amount of calculation, and typing numerical answers. ETS believes that these improvements will help to better test each candidate's potential for success in the future (in graduate school). GRE test time

GRE test is divided into two parts: written test and computer test. The written test is conducted in June and 10 every year, and candidates must complete the computer test before taking the written test. Take 2009 as an example: candidates who took the written test on June 5438+ 10 must complete the computer test from July 1 to September 19, 2009 (note: the test will not be arranged on national legal holidays). June 5438+ 10, 2009 The written test time is June 5438+ 10, 24. Candidates who took the written test in June of 20 10 must complete the computer test from September 20th to May 8th of 20 10, 2009. June 20 10 written test time is June 12.

GRE validity period

It is valid for 5 years from taking the exam, and individual majors in individual schools require GRE scores within three years. You need to find this yourself.

Edit the exam type in this section.

There are two kinds of GRE exams.

One is general ability test or aptitude test, and the other is professional test or advanced test. GRE also has a writing test, that is, the writing test (computer test), which is now a compulsory test.

General test

The GRE general test mainly examines candidates' basic English ability and the breadth and depth of English knowledge. Most China students take this exam. The written test, including oral test and quantitative test, is 800, out of * * * 1600, and the result is valid for 5 years. The GRE exam lasts for three hours and consists of four parts, all of which are multiple-choice questions, and the method of deducting points for wrong answers is not implemented. Two parts of the four-part exam content belong to vocabulary items (oral) and two parts belong to mathematics items (quantitative). The vocabulary item takes 1 hour, including four questions: ① completing the sentence; ② analogy; ③ Reading comprehension; 4 antonyms; Among them, complete sentences, analogy and antonyms are all understanding of vocabulary; Reading comprehension is the examinee's understanding of the logical structure and theme of the article; Articles can involve any scientific field, but most of them are biochemistry, astronomy, literature, geography and history. The vocabulary item is mainly to test the breadth and depth of vocabulary understanding of candidates, so China students get a low score in this respect, but it has no great influence on applying for scholarships, because ETS has a clear explanation on GRE score: "GRE is set for candidates whose mother tongue is English, and candidates whose mother tongue is not English will be affected, because their vocabulary is not as good as that of candidates whose mother tongue is English. When reviewing applicants' GRE scores, we should take the auditor's experience as the standard, and should not adopt uniform and strict minimum admission standards. There is also a TOEFL that tests English language ability. " Therefore, although China students' Chinese scores are very low, they still have a good chance to get a scholarship because their TOEFL scores exceed 550 (American universities think that a TOEFL score of 550 proves that candidates have high English understanding and application ability, and that candidates can fully adapt to English teaching in the United States, while the average score of high school graduates who take TOEFL in the United States is only 580). Math hour includes three types of questions: ① comparison of numbers; ② Separation of numbers; (3) illustrations, involving basic problems of arithmetic, algebra and geometry. These questions are only used in senior one in China, and the questions are relatively easy. Therefore, most candidates in China can get high marks in mathematics, and quite a few of them got full marks of 800.

Subject test

There are not many candidates from China who take the GRE special exam, because most American universities do not require GRE special scores, but only ordinary GRE scores. However, applicants who apply for a postgraduate major that is inconsistent with the applicant's undergraduate major need to provide special GRE scores. For example, Mr. A has obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from a domestic university, and wants to go to the United States to study for a master's degree in economics. He needs to provide the GRE test results in economics. If he wants to study for a master's degree in biochemistry, he needs to provide GRE biochemistry scores. If the undergraduate major is the same as the postgraduate major, there is generally no need to provide special grades. GRE subjects include seven exams: mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, computer, psychology and English literature.

Edit the exam structure of this paragraph.

At present, GRE CAT's examination idea is the same as that of written examination, and its content is similar, but the distribution and order of questions have changed greatly. CAT has 4 or 5 parts, but only 3 parts are scored, namely oral, quantitative and analytical. The experimental part is not a grade, but it is not because you can't tell which part it is, so you should answer all seven questions carefully. ETS familiarizes candidates with the equipment in the examination room (highly recommended! Due to the uncertainty of the structure, the total examination time is uncertain, generally not more than 4 hours. The whole process of the exam is as follows: tutorial-computer tutoring exercise, unlimited time, background investigation, oral English, 38 questions, 30 minutes-scoring, quantitative mathematics, 30 questions, 30 minutes-scoring, and a certain research section-maybe, it will be a mathematical reasoning, which will be the last part and will not be scored. Choose to keep or cancel the grade. Choose to submit your grades to the school. The specific distribution of up to four test questions: verb 1 ~ 7: Fill in the blanks, and each question has 1 ~ 2 empty items. No.8 ~ 65438 +06: Analogy, there are five options for collocation questions 17 ~ 27: Reading (a long article and a short article) questions 28 ~ 38: antonyms, and selecting quantitative questions from five word or phrase options 1 ~ questions 15: number. Task 1-30 minutes without rest. Task 2-30 Minutes GRE Subject Examination GRE professional examination is divided into mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, history, music, French, Spanish, computer, economics, engineering, education, geology, American literature and political science.
