The Central Academy of Drama is a college directly under the Ministry of Education, an art university focusing on drama, film and television art education, and the highest institution of drama art education in China. Beijing Film Academy was founded on 1950. Formerly known as the Academy of Performing Arts of the Central Film Bureau (Film Academy).

1956 was renamed Beijing Film Academy with the approval of the State Council, with a history of 52 years.

College began to recruit undergraduates from 1956, and continued to train on-the-job professional cadres for the development of new China film industry. From 1956- 1965, the academy has sent more than 1300 students to the film industry in China. The graduates trained by these colleges in the early and 1960s have become the professional backbone of the film industry in New China, and have been active in the important positions of film and television art creation in China since 1970s.

1966- 1977, the film education in the college was completely paralyzed. 1973, Jiang Qing and others merged the art colleges affiliated to the Ministry of Culture into the Central May 7th Art University, and the Beijing Film Academy was changed to the Film Academy of the Central May 7th Art University. After the Cultural Revolution ended and the Gang of Four was crushed, 1977 was approved by the State Council and the former Beijing Film Academy was restored.

1978, the college resumed undergraduate enrollment. 1982, the students of this class became the first batch of graduates of Beijing Film Academy who were awarded bachelor's degrees. In the following 22 years, many students of various majors became famous filmmakers in China and even the world, and made important contributions to the influence of China films in the world.

Since 1984, the college has been recruiting graduate students. In 2003, it was approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a doctoral degree awarding unit, and began to recruit doctoral students in 2004.

In 2003, our college finally successfully applied for a doctoral degree awarding unit, set up a doctoral program in film studies, and added two master programs in fine arts and radio and television arts.
