Liu Shikun began to learn piano at the age of three. Stage performance at the age of five. At the age of ten, he won the first prize in China Children's Piano Competition. The Liszt International Piano Competition held in Hungary at the age of seventeen won a special prize. 19 years old, 1958, the first Tchaikovsky international piano competition, the highest international piano competition in the world so far, won the runner-up and became famous in the world music scene.

His performances have spread all over most developed countries in the world. He was also the first Chinese mainland musician to perform in Hongkong, and the first artist to visit the United States and Taiwan Province Province and perform in the literary and art circles in Chinese mainland.

China's only member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, member of the steering group of the Hong Kong Arts Center appointed by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, president of the Hong Kong (Overseas) Writers and Artists Association, and honorary professor of nearly 10 art colleges such as the Central Conservatory of Music. He is an active figure in the national music industry. 1964 has been re-elected as a deputy to the National People's Congress. He used to be the deputy director of the Art Bureau of the Ministry of Culture of China, a member of the National Committee of the Federation of Chinese Literary and Art Circles, and a member of the China Musicians Association.

He now works in nearly 30 cities in Hong Kong and China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Fuzhou, Xi 'an, Nanning and Haikou. He opened about 40 "Liu Shikun Piano Art Center" and several "Liu Shikun Music Art Kindergarten", with more than15,000 students. He is one of the most successful artists engaged in art education and cultural undertakings in China's music and literature circles.
