East Gate and Chegong Temple

Che Kung Temple

There is a magnificent Chegong Temple, which is filled with incense all year round.

During the Spring Festival, especially on the third day of Che Gong's birthday, the number of participants in Che Gong Temple from all over Hong Kong and Kowloon exceeded100000.

Because some people can't squeeze into the temple to pay homage, they even burn paper and incense in the nearby open space. As you can imagine, the scene reached its climax.

According to legend, Che Gong was a valiant soldier in the late Southern Song Dynasty. He was born in Five Blessingg, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, and was awarded the title of Grand Marshal for his meritorious service in investigating the rebellion in Pingjiang South.

Later, the Mongolian army was besieged on all sides and was on a roll. Song Jun couldn't resist, losing ground.

Emperor Song fled to Hong Kong under the escort of Prime Minister Lu Xiufu.

At that time, Marshal Che was also escorted south and died on the way.

Because of his loyalty and courage, the villagers worshipped him as a god after his death.

Dawei Chegong Temple is famous far and near. It was built in the late Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 400 years. It is also known as one of the four major temples in Hong Kong, together with Wuwen Temple, Wong Tai Sin Temple and Fotangmen Temple in Hollywood.

There are two versions of this ancient temple, one is related to the suppression of plague, and the other is said to be related to the geomantic omen of the villagers in Tianxin Village.

During the Chongzhen period in the late Ming Dynasty, there was an outbreak in all parts of the New Territories. At that time, people didn't know what kind of epidemic it was, but it was cholera. Cholera is an infectious disease, and its pathogen is Hula bacteria moving in water, so it is highly contagious.

At that time, Sha Tin was the most popular area.

Later, the villagers studied the history books and county annals and found that there was a marshal Che in the Song Dynasty, who was not particularly successful in suppressing thieves. Wherever he went, the epidemic stopped immediately, so they asked someone to mold the statue of Marshal Che and built a Che Gong Temple here to suppress the epidemic.

When the temple is built, the epidemic will not be popular.

Another way of saying it is that when the villagers in Tianxin Village were building the village, they hired Master Kanyu to inspect the village and found that there were three rivers meeting here in front of the village.

At the same time, behind the north pillow castle peak, excellent feng shui.

It is most suitable to build a temple and a town gate, and it will be very prosperous in the future.

Therefore, the villagers enthusiastically donated money to build this Che Gong Temple there to commemorate Marshal Che.

Later, there happened to be a plague in the pear garden, and many people died of it inexplicably. The villagers panicked and thought they were evil spirits.

At that time, medicine was underdeveloped, and the villagers had no choice but to pray for God's blessing.

The villagers had to pin their hopes entirely on the lathe workers.

In order to ward off evil spirits, they carried the statue of Che Gong all over the country, beating gongs and drums and setting off firecrackers.

Later, the plague did disappear, and the villagers felt that Chegong was very effective, so they invited monks and Taoist priests to build altars and shrines, praying that Chegong would protect the country, the people would be safe and the weather would be good.

He also made a wish in front of Chegong Temple and held a grand ceremony every ten years to thank God for his kindness.

Since then, the once-in-a-decade fight has become a major event in Shatian District. Since then, lathe workers have become famous, and many people come here to worship.
