Why can't most elderly people in Shanghai speak Mandarin well and most young people can't speak Shanghainese?
This is my personal opinion, that is to say, our Mandarin was standardized decades ago, so the older generation didn't learn Mandarin specifically, and now communication mainly uses Mandarin, so some parents deliberately train their children's Mandarin, but rarely use Shanghai dialect, so many young people can't speak Shanghai dialect now.
