In the mid-1960s, the library of Harbin Institute of Technology has gradually formed a collection system with the characteristics of Harbin Institute of Technology, which pays equal attention to both Chinese and foreign languages, science and engineering, mainly mechanical, electrical and instrument books. The 1980s, after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, was another great development period of the library undertaking of Harbin Institute of Technology. After entering the 1990s, the librarianship began to change from the traditional manual operation mode to the modern management mode, especially the completion of the new library 1995, which opened a new page in the history of library development.

In 2000, after the merger of Harbin Institute of Technology and Harbin Jianzhu University, the library of Harbin Institute of Technology has two large-scale modern buildings with a total area of 40,948 square meters, including 22,864 square meters in the first district library, 0/6,868 square meters in the second district library, 3,262 building branches/0/2/0/6 square meters in kloc, and reading rooms. By the end of 20 10, the library had 3.25 million traditional collections, 63 kinds of e-books1320 thousand, and 3 kinds of free electronic resources1are recommended, including various well-known large-scale comprehensive databases and authoritative full-text databases of publications of various professional societies. Since 2003, the library has started to build its own characteristic full-text database of dissertations and national defense engineering documents. The collection of literature information has formed a multi-disciplinary, multi-lingual, multi-carrier and comprehensive resource system suitable for schools and departments. The library (1 area) mainly collects books on engineering, combining science and engineering with management disciplines; the library (area 2) mainly collects books on civil engineering, municipal and environmental engineering, traffic engineering and basic disciplines; and the building branch mainly collects books on architecture and urban planning disciplines. At the same time, all libraries have books on humanities and social sciences.

The library implements a modern document information resource management mode integrating collection, borrowing and reading, and has various lending rooms, advanced electronic reading rooms, multifunctional lecture halls and conference rooms, as well as a modern network management platform.

The library is the literature information resource center of the whole school, with seven business departments to provide readers with literature borrowing and information services. The Library of Harbin Institute of Technology is currently the CALIS Northeast National Defense Literature Information Center of the Ministry of Education, the CALIS Digital Library Base of the Ministry of Education, the library where the Secretariat of the Working Committee of Heilongjiang University is located, and the CALIS Heilongjiang Literature Information Center. With the continuous development of modern information technology, libraries provide services for the whole society, such as literature consultation, information consultation, sci-tech novelty retrieval, original text transmission, online business and so on.
