Koolhaas won the French Caen Library Design Competition.
OMA architect Rem Koolhaas, a Dutch architect, beat five other finalists and won the international competition to design a new library for Caen. This library with a building area of 12000 square meters will be the first cultural building designed by OMA Architects in France.

The library designed by Koolhaas is characterized by four flanking buildings pointing to four landmark buildings in Caen-Abbaye-Aux-Daams in the north; On the east is Abbaye-Aux-Hommes; South is the Central Railway Station; To the west is a planned development zone.

Clément Blanchet, project director of OMA Architects, said: "There is no bridge connecting four different areas, and the space is arranged along two intersecting axes, creating a gathering space for knowledge and people."

Two independent reading rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows to promote interdisciplinary cooperation. The reading room is designed with outdoor space, which is open to parking lots, sidewalks and squares.
