China Library Classification

Book classification, also called book classification thesaurus, is classified according to the contents, forms, genres and readers' uses. Under the guidance of certain philosophical thoughts, the books of various disciplines are divided into several categories according to their subject contents by using the principle of knowledge classification and logical methods. Each category is divided into many subclasses, and each subclass is divided into molecular subclasses.

Finally, every kind of book can be divided into certain categories, and each category has a category number. Classified thesaurus is a collection of hierarchical classification numbers and categories.

China Library Classification (formerly known as China Library Classification) is a representative large-scale comprehensive classification compiled and published after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and it is the most widely used classification system in domestic libraries today, referred to as Chinese Library Classification. The compilation of China Library Classification began at 197 1 and has been published in five editions.

Compared with other classifications in China, China Library Classification came into being late, but it developed rapidly. It not only systematically summarizes the compilation experience of China classification, but also absorbs the compilation theory and technology of foreign classification. According to a certain ideological point of view, based on subject classification, combined with the contents and characteristics of books and materials, a classification table is formed according to categories.

China Library Classification has been widely used in all kinds of libraries in China, and the classification numbers of China Library Classification are recorded in major domestic large-scale bibliographies, retrieval publications, machine-readable databases and Chinese national standard book numbers.

The China Library Classification adopts the mixed numbering of Chinese phonetic alphabet and Arabic numerals, with one letter representing a major category, reflecting the alphabetical order of major categories, and the disciplines subdivided under major categories are composed of Arabic numerals. In order to adapt to the development of industrial technology and the classification of this kind of literature, the two-letter classification of industrial technology is adopted.
