In 938, Hubei Lianzhong Rural Normal School was established, and later it was changed to Hubei Seventh Normal School. 1950 changed its name to Enshi Normal School; Enshi Teachers College was established in1978; 1984 Approved by the former State Education Commission, the University of Western Hubei was established on the basis of Enshi Normal University; 1989 was renamed Hubei Institute for Nationalities.
