Behind the scenes production
From children's picture books to movies
Forty-five years ago, the famous Harper&Row Publishing House published a children's picture book called Beast Home. This children's book, with only 10 sentences and 338 words, topped the sales charts as soon as it was published, and won the Kadik Award, which is known as the picture book Oscar. The book author maurice sendak became the darling of the picture book industry. When this book was published, there were 20 stills of Beast Home, and the story was put on the screen by American and Czechoslovakian animators. But it was just a seven-minute animation. Since then, the idea of putting this story on the screen as a standard-length film has been lingering in maurice sendak's mind. In the1990s, he once found Spike Jonze, hoping that he could put this story on the screen. However, after reading the script, Spike Jonze did not show the eagerness to shoot this masterpiece. He simply said, I'll think about it.
His consideration is six years. During this period, he filmed the well-received Puppet Life and adapted the screenplay. After seeing this film, maurice sendak is more convinced that Spike Jonze is the most suitable director for this film. He said: I was surprised when I regarded life as a puppet. This is a film that exists in our hearts. I hope my book will be shot by Jones. There is no doubt that he is the most suitable director. Although there are the best directors, there is still a huge problem to bring this book with only 338 words and a few illustrations to the screen: the script.
In an interview, Jones, who is not good at words, also said that the biggest problem of the whole movie is the script. He said: The original work is a very simple fairy tale with only 10 sentences. Because it's for children, it can't be too difficult and the plot won't be too complicated. But it is difficult to turn it into a standard-length movie. I spent a lot of time on this to develop the clue of the whole story. This is a classic story, which cannot be adapted in a too popular way, nor can it be lengthened in a too conventional way. What I need to do is to find a good screenwriter and discuss with him how to write this script. Jones found co-writer Dave Eggers, who is also a newcomer. So far, his resume only contains sam mendes's "Moving for My Son". After discussion, they decided to put the clue of this film on Max's growing process. In the end, this story about growth became a long script of11page. Jones said: this is not an action movie, nor is it a science fiction movie. I think it's a road film. When children run away from home, they meet not the same kind of people, but all kinds of kind monsters. He became the queen of the animal kingdom and found that the world was not as simple as he imagined. He needed to grow and mature. At this point, the film is no longer just for children. Adults can find their lost childhood and childhood from the film and see how they have moved from ignorance to maturity. Maybe maturity will make us lose a lot, but this is the price.
Painful shooting, a difficult later period.
Maurice sendak, known as Picasso in the fairy tale world, created many unusual monsters in the book, so how to express these animals in the film became the biggest problem after the script. Spike Jonze said: On the one hand, these monsters are dangerous; On the other hand, they are so cute that people can't help touching them. What I can imagine is that they are in this world like us, so there are such a group of dangerous and funny monsters around Max.
In order to shoot these monsters realistically, Spike Jonze specially invited some very tall local actors to put on special costumes to play wild animals during filming in Melbourne. Because some monsters in the novel are more than 3 meters tall, these actors are not tall enough, so they have to put shelves on their clothes and walk on stilts. Because these clothes are too heavy, those actors have to take off their hoods and have a rest every half hour, and they have to blow 15 minutes of air conditioning. But stuntmen are not so lucky. They have to stay in costumes for an hour. In order to ensure the integrity of the fur on the costumes, they can't blow air conditioning. Jones said: this is the most difficult place in the whole shooting process, and it is also the most peculiar place. We fantasize about a world where people and animals live together. Sometimes at the scene, I will become very trance, and feel that the world in "Beast Home" really exists. And the little actor I'm looking for is really excellent. I can't imagine who else can play Max. He belongs to a unique type of child, profound, thoughtful, lovely, sincere, wild, imaginative and compassionate. He put it all in the movie.
By the time of post-production, the problem appeared again: how to give the beast expression and emotion. Jim henson Company, which has cooperated with Spike Jonze for many times, undertook this work. Jim henson used to be a famous puppet actor, and now he is the boss of this company. He said: Although we don't use any new technology, our working methods are brand-new. In the past, if you want to add expressions to such characters, most of them are made directly by computers, and the stuntman only refers to his own expressions at most. But this time, we specially invited some comedians who were performing in the bar to make various expressions, and then we took pictures of them and captured their expressions with the motion tracking system. These data are not for one person, but for a group of people. So the data of these expressions is an average. Then we integrate and count these data and finally synthesize them into animals. So the audience can see the incomparable real and delicate expression on the monster's face on the IMAX screen.

Wonderful point of view
In everyone's heart, there is hope, even in the desert, even in the storm, as long as a yellow flower can make people hesitate; Everyone's heart, there is panic, dark forest, silent corner, that furry shadow, will not hurt people; There is a yearning for adventure in everyone's heart, whether it is running wildly in the collapsed fairyland or braving the wind and waves in the sea, just want to shout out all their vital capacity; In everyone's heart, there is a free dream, shouting, running, rolling, and secular troubles will roll away! Without complicated words and full of philosophy, a few pages of white paper with a brush, an awesome man named maurice sendak outlined the vibrant world 46 years ago. Dozens of sentences and seemingly childish brushstrokes have made him a masterpiece of American illustrated children's literature, and also made him "Picasso in the field of children's painting". The first American children's illustrator who won the Andersen Illustrator Award was inseparable from the word "greatness" all his life.
Wouldn't it be a sigh if such a unique work missed the opportunity to move to the screen? Over the years, many screenwriters, directors and producers have made waves of unrest, but most of them have given up halfway. We can't blame them for giving up. The profound meaning of the original lines washing style is enough to make the adaptation of the first two books, not to mention that even the picture book itself took two years to reach the top in a pessimistic voice, and it is quite difficult for the movie version to make a blockbuster!
Some people will bend over in front of pressure, and naturally some people will be ready to move in front of challenges. Spike Jonze, a geek who directed films such as Pinocchio and Stealing the Orchid Finger, undoubtedly belongs to the latter. He had a soft spot for this childhood book, and he would rather put aside the principle of originality and long-term readiness for the time being, until he finally had a shaping adaptation idea four years ago. Moreover, he not only took over this hot potato, but also insisted that Sondak participate in the whole process of film production, starting with Excellence. It is said that even the painter himself admires the effect of the finished product. He was not only deeply moved, but also praised the vitality of the film, which made the paintings many years ago bloom with new flowers.

titbits
The film is adapted from the best-selling children's picture book of the same name published by 1963. The original author maurice sendak is a famous American novelist of children's books. 1964, this novel won the Cadic Prize called Picture Book Oscar, and the manuscript of this book was permanently collected by the National Library of America.
Maurice sendak's novel was animated for 7 minutes on 1973.
Eric Goldberg, who directed Fantasia 2000, was chosen as the director of this film.
In order to find the right actor for Max, the crew auditioned thousands of boys and went to several countries before and after, which took several months.
As early as 1990, maurice sendak found Spike Jonze, hoping that he could adapt the novel into a movie. But Sendek also knows that it is not easy to find the right director and screenwriter. So the shooting plan ran aground until 2005.
During the script writing, Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers will send the written script and the monster model to maurice sendak for a look every day.
