From 65438 to 0944, the National Dunhuang Art Research Institute was established and began to manage and protect the cultural relics in Dunhuang Grottoes. From 65438 to 0984, Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute was expanded to Dunhuang Research Institute, and the protection room was expanded to Dunhuang Research Institute. She is the earliest specialized institution engaged in the protection of grotto cultural relics in China. In the past 50 years, it has developed into a scientific research entity focusing on the protection of grotto cultural relics, murals, statue restoration and engineering reinforcement. The protection institute consists of environmental research room, analysis research room, restoration technology room, file information reference room, image processing research room and cultural relics protection technology service center; It also owns the Conservation Research Institute of Dunhuang Research Institute, the Getty Institute (GCI) of the United States, the National Institute of Cultural Property in Tokyo, Japan, and the cooperative project research office of Osaka University, Japan. The research institute has formed a team of protection technology and restoration technology composed of doctors, masters, bachelors, chemistry, physics, engineering geology, computers, forestry, architecture, surveying and mapping, photography, meteorology and other disciplines, with nearly 50 senior, middle and junior titles. It also has a number of advanced analytical and environmental monitoring instruments and equipment, such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier infrared, polarizing microscope and automatic environmental monitoring instrument. Over the past decades, three grottoes in Dunhuang have been reinforced, and murals and colored sculptures have been restored and reinforced. At the same time, it has helped to complete or is completing dozens of major cultural relics protection and maintenance projects in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Henan, Ningxia, Tibet, Zhejiang and other provinces, such as mural painting, color plastic restoration, and soil site reinforcement projects. At present, there are more than 40 protection scientific research projects issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Cultural Heritage Administration and other departments. In recent years, in cooperation with some domestic universities and research institutes, the Institute has successively completed high-tech projects such as the key scientific and technological research project of Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Commission "Research on Computer Storage and Management System of Dunhuang Murals", the national key scientific and technological project of the Ninth Five-Year Plan of the State Science and Technology Commission "Computer Storage and Replication System of Endangered and Precious Cultural Relics Information", the national 863 project "Application of Shuguang Power Station in Cultural Relics Protection" and the National Natural Science Foundation. The research and implementation of the above projects will open up a new field for our country to use computer technology to store cultural relics.

Since the late 1980s, the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes Protection International Cooperation Project has cooperated with foreign institutions such as Tokyo National Institute of Cultural Property, American Getty Protection Institute (GCI), Tokyo University of the Arts, Osaka University of Japan, American Mellon Foundation, and Northwestern University to carry out research on the protection and preservation of Dunhuang Grottoes. From 65438 to 0993, our institute, GCI and China Institute of Cultural Relics successfully held the International Academic Conference on the Protection of Ancient Silk Road Sites. "China Grottoes Cultural Relics Protection Research Training Course" sponsored by UNESCO and entrusted by National Cultural Heritage Administration. In 2000, entrusted by National Cultural Heritage Administration, the "Earth Site Protection Training Course" was held.

The Protection Research Institute of Dunhuang Research Institute will base itself on Dunhuang, face the national grottoes, murals and earthen sites, look around the world, continue to strengthen cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign countries, seize the rare development opportunity of the western development, and make new contributions to the protection of human cultural heritage. The Academy of Fine Arts is mainly engaged in the copying and reproduction of Dunhuang murals, theoretical research and artistic creation activities of Dunhuang art. It is a professional institution with a certain scale and level of mural copying, copying and research in China.

After several generations' efforts, the Academy of Fine Arts now has more than 2,000 murals, more than 50 colored sculptures, the original cave 1 1 and more than 30 research papers. In addition to copying the murals of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Yulin Grottoes and Xiqian Buddha Cave, he was also invited to copy the tomb of Prince Zhang Huai in Shaanxi, the tomb of Prince Yide, the mural of Qizil in Xinjiang, the mural of Baicheng and Jiayuguan, and the brick of Dunhuang Wei and Jin tombs.

In order to carry forward the excellent cultural heritage of the Chinese nation, from 1943 to the end of 2000, Dunhuang murals and colored sculptures were exhibited at home and abroad for more than 20 times, so that more people can understand the splendid Dunhuang art created by the ancient working people.

The Academy of Fine Arts created large-scale indoor and outdoor murals for Dunhuang Railway Station and Lanzhou Railway Station. Create Buddhist murals for Zhilian Jingyuan in Hong Kong. According to the needs of the development of Dunhuang studies and their own research conditions, the researchers of Dunhuang Literature Research Institute mainly focus on the combination of Dunhuang literature and Dunhuang grottoes, and the combination of Dunhuang literature and Dunhuang historical geography.

The main functions of the editorial department of Dunhuang Research Institute are to edit, publish and distribute Dunhuang studies, and to plan, assemble and edit collections and atlases of Dunhuang studies. Since the publication of 1983, Dunhuang studies has been published quarterly and bimonthly. Over the past 20 years, it has published more than 70 issues, and published 5 supplements in cooperation with large-scale international academic seminars. The journal has had a good influence in Dunhuang academic circles and periodical circles in China. Some national libraries, universities, scientific research institutions and cultural relics departments at home and abroad are listed as permanent periodicals, and some periodicals with necessary desks for experts and scholars are also listed as core periodicals of social sciences in China. Dunhuang Studies has won the Outstanding Social Science Periodical Award in Gansu Province, the First Class Famous Brand Periodical Award and the National Outstanding Social Science Periodical Award successively, and entered the first and second national 100 key social science periodicals and "double high" periodicals.

In the past 20 years, the Ministry has successively edited and published the National Dunhuang Studies Symposium1983 (4 volumes), the International Dunhuang Grottoes Symposium1987 (2 volumes), the International Dunhuang Studies Symposium1990 (4 volumes) and the Dunhuang Studies Symposium. Many of them have won provincial and national publishing awards. The editorial department takes it as its duty to display academic achievements and promote Dunhuang art. The main function of the image department of Dunhuang Research Institute is to provide pictures, videos and other materials for the protection, research and publicity of Dunhuang grottoes. The department has taken nearly 40,000 photos of various grottoes since 1950s. Since 1980s, nearly 100 videos have been shot.

For a long time, the Ministry has undertaken a large number of photo photography work of Dunhuang Grottoes' art publications at home and abroad, such as Dunhuang Murals Volume of China's Complete Works of Fine Arts, Dunhuang Sculptures Volume of China, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in China (5 volumes), Anxi Yulin Grottoes in China Grottoes, Dunhuang Murals Complete Works of China (10 volume) and so on. The Ministry also produced a video feature film of Mogao grottoes art and a VCD disc of Dunhuang Mogao grottoes art; In addition to photographing the grotto cultural relics, the Ministry also photographed a large number of photographic works about the Silk Road scenic spots and natural scenery, and published them in a collection. The exhibition center of Dunhuang Research Institute is called "Dunhuang Grottoes Cultural Relics Protection Research and Exhibition Center". It is the only grotto cultural relics protection and exhibition institution in China, covering an area of more than 20,000 square meters and a construction area of more than 5,000 square meters. The official exhibition is the "Tibetan Bronze Sculpture Art Exhibition", which shows the exquisite sculptures of Tibetan Buddhism and has high cultural relics and ornamental value.

The exhibition center consists of departments such as cultural relics collection management, exhibition, explanation service and equipment management, which manage the daily operation and opening up of the exhibition center and undertake various exhibitions and external exhibition activities of Dunhuang Research Institute. It provides powerful help and support for people to fully and deeply understand Dunhuang Grottoes and Dunhuang Buddhist art. The Dunhuang Tibetan Sutra Cave Exhibition Hall is a special exhibition hall under the jurisdiction of the Exhibition Center of Dunhuang Research Institute. It is located in Sanqing Palace at the northern end of the southern area of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, adjacent to the famous Tibetan Sutra Cave (Cave 17). Sanqing Palace is commonly known as Si Xia. In May of the 26th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1900), Wang Daoshi, a native of Macheng, Hubei Province, discovered the Tibetan Sutra Cave on the temple side. Later, in the thirty-fourth year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1908), the original Sanqing Palace was rebuilt and lived here. The temple is an important witness to the discovery and theft of cultural relics in the disrepair Tibetan Sutra Cave. On the occasion of the centenary of the discovery of the Tibetan Sutra Cave, Dunhuang Research Institute restored and rebuilt the temple and turned it into a "Dunhuang Tibetan Sutra Cave Exhibition Hall", showing the exquisite cultural relics of the Tibetan Sutra Cave and the historical facts of its discovery and dispersion for future generations.

The exhibition hall of the Tibetan Sutra Cave displays the former residence of Taoist Wang, the historical facts of the excavation, closure, discovery, dispersion and theft of the Tibetan Sutra Cave, the original unearthed documents, Buddhist scriptures and other cultural relics collected by Dunhuang Research Institute, and the copies of silk paintings and paper paintings now in the British Museum and the French Museum. It is an important tourist reception place in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. The reception department of Dunhuang Research Institute is mainly responsible for explaining and publicizing the art of Mogao Grottoes. The lecturers have received systematic professional training and strict examination. There are seven languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, French, German, Korean and Russian. Foreign language interpreters have been systematically studied in regular foreign language colleges and can explain in fluent language.
