Legal basis: Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
Protected domain
The scope of works protected by the Convention is all literary and artistic works that are nationals of the Contracting State or first published in the Contracting State.
"Literary and artistic works" includes all works in the fields of literature, science and art, such as books, lectures, speeches, sermons, plays, mime, dance, music, film works, pictures, architecture, sculpture, photography, practical works of art, geography, anatomy, charts, diagrams and three-dimensional works in architecture or science.
Secondly, it also includes "deductive works", that is, translation, adaptation and music arrangement. Like other transformations of literary or artistic works, as long as the copyright of the original is not damaged, this transformation will be protected equally with the original. Works whose protection period has not expired when the Convention comes into force are also protected, that is, they have retrospective effect.
