SISU, the only foreign language institution of higher learning in southwest China, was founded in April 1950. Its predecessor was the Russian Training Group of Southwest Military and Political University of China People's Liberation Army. On May 4th 1953, it was renamed Southwest Russian Institute, and on May 4th 1959, it was expanded to Sichuan International Studies University. Guo Moruo personally wrote the name of the school, which has been in use ever since.
