Located in Nanjing, Nanjing Teachers College of Special Education is the only independent institution of higher learning in China that mainly trains special education teachers.

Nanjing Normal University of Special Education was founded in 1982, and its predecessor was the first normal school of special education in China founded by the Ministry of Education. The school began to train five-year junior college students from 1997, and was upgraded to an ordinary university in 2002.
