Wenzhou University can be traced back to Wenzhou Normal School in Zhejiang Province, founded in 1933. In 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Wenzhou Normal University and the former Wenzhou University formally merged to form a new Wenzhou University.
1933, the Kuomintang Central Committee promulgated the Law on Normal Schools and the Regulations on Normal Schools, requiring all provinces to delimit normal areas and set up a normal school in each area. The authorities of the Education Department of Zhejiang Province "feel that there is a shortage of teachers and backward education in southern Zhejiang, and it is planned to establish an independent school in southern Zhejiang, but it has not been realized for a while because of the shortage of provincial libraries".
At that time, Mr. Huang Xiangchu, a famous patriotic thinker in modern Wenzhou, was doing business in Shanghai. After hearing the news, he donated the private school building of Zhenglou Primary School (estimated at about 3 1900 silver) to the province and founded Wenzhou Normal School in Zhejiang Province.
