Your laziness makes me sad: Fitzgerald's letter to his daughter

Fitzgerald/

Andrew Turnbull/Editor

Yili/Painting Jiang Hui/Translation

Houlang | Sichuan People's Publishing House April 2022

Many writers have written letters to their children, but Fitzgerald's letters about many shortcomings in his and his daughter's lives make people feel true. Perhaps in that era when there is no need to talk about his parenting skills, such letters can better reflect the bitterness of a poor father to his daughter who is busy with social activities and neglects his studies: "I am already like this, can't you make progress?"

This book contains 70 letters Fitzgerald wrote to his daughter scottie from 1933 to 1940, which were compiled by Andrew Turnbull, an authorized friend of scottie, and have not been deleted. This is also the last few years of Fitzgerald's life. He stayed away from his teenage daughter, took care of his mentally ill wife and tried to face an unsuccessful career.

Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in his apartment in Hollywood on Christmas Eve (1940 65438+February 2 1) at the age of 44. Before his death, his The Great Gatsby was not widely praised. From these letters, we can see his many feelings about literary creation and many reflections on his own life. He turned them into an experience, sometimes humorous and sometimes extremely worried, hoping that his daughter would understand. At the end of a letter, he wrote: "According to the contribution fee of Saturday Evening Post, this letter is worth $4,000. Since it is specially written for you and contains so many points, aren't you going to read it twice? " However, like most children, Scotty doesn't want to listen to his father's advice.

In his letters, Fitzgerald spread his talents, talked about how to write, talked about choosing courses in universities, talked about making friends with a reliable man, talked about "everything you do from the age of fifteen to eighteen will set the tone of your life", analyzed the shortcomings of yourself and your wife, and told your daughter many times that you should not inherit us. His sorrow is that he knows his daughter's character like the back of his hand, and he has seen her life from his own. The appendix of this book gives a brief introduction to scottie's later life. It doesn't look as bad as Fitzgerald feared, but it's not always smooth.

Children and parents' cognition of the world is often not at the same level, so watching children grow up slowly, only by telling each other frankly can they get to know each other one day. This is probably what these letters mean.

Oliver is a sissy.

Tomi ede paola/ Author/Painter Dong Haiya/Translator

Fantasy Country | 2 1 Century Publishing Group March 2022

Suitable reading age: over 3 years old

This is a picture book created by American children's literature writer tomiede paola (1934-2020). There are also two picture books published together: Silence and Little Bird Michael. Together with Oliver is a sissy, it shows three themes: nature and man, man and environment and self-discovery.

In Oliver is a sissy, Oliver is a little boy who loves dancing. Not only that, he also likes reading, drawing, skipping rope and playing with paper dolls. He just doesn't like to play games that little boys often play, just like tomiede paola did when she was a child, so he created this book to comfort children like him or comfort their parents. We always say that boys should look like boys and girls should look like girls, but who stipulates that boys must look like that? Isn't it just as good for a child like Oliver who loves dancing and has devoted time and effort to it?

Di Bola's picture books are well-known in Chinese, such as Grandma Upstairs and Grandma Downstairs, Grandma Witch and Ali's Red Cloak. He likes to express the children's world with clean and powerful lines and modeling design, plus simple words. He also created many children's literature works, such as The Book Department of No.26 Meng Fan Street (all 8 volumes), which is an autobiographical story similar to Oliver is a sissy, telling his childhood when he moved to No.26 Meng Fan Street with his parents on 1938. In addition, he rewrote many folk stories with Italian and Irish traditions. His stories are always full of vitality and friendliness, emphasizing the process of earnest and continuous efforts, which also makes him look like a big urchin who exudes life wisdom.
