The International Andersen Award was established by the International Children's Book Federation on 1956, sponsored by Danish Queen Margrethe II, and named after the fairy tale master Andersen.

The award is selected every two years to reward outstanding children's book writers and illustrators around the world. The winner will be awarded a gold medal and a certificate. At first, it was only awarded to living writers, and from 1965 onwards, it was also awarded to excellent illustrators. Winners are limited to those who have been engaged in youth book creation for a long time and made outstanding contributions.
So far, 26 writers and 20 illustrators have won prizes (list of winners of the International Andersen Prize). China writers and painters Sun Youjun/Qiu Zhaoming (1990), Jin Bo/Andy Yang (1992),/Wu (2002), Cao Wenxuan/Wang Xiaoming (2004) and/Tao (2006) were nominated for this award.
On April 4th, 20 16, Cao Wenxuan won the "International Andersen Award" of ibby (IBBY) IBBY)20 16, which was the first time that a China writer won this honor.
