In 500 BC, Athens and Samos established public libraries to serve a few literate citizens. Later, Aristotle founded a private library with a rich collection of books.

It is said that in order to surpass Aristotle, Ptolemy I Soter founded the Alexandria Library in 300 BC, with a collection of 400,000 volumes (700,000 volumes), covering almost the ideas and arts of Greek, Indian, Persian and Palestinian civilizations at that time. These books are all papers copied by professional writers on papyrus. Alexandria Library is considered to be the earliest large-scale database that collected all the achievements of human civilization.
