In 1950s, with the merger of universities, CUHK College of Arts and Sciences merged with the former Lingnan University. In order to respect the history of Lingnan University and take care of its alumni, the original strength of Lingnan University was specially called Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University. In the past, there were many departments and they were relatively independent. But because its alumni are all over Southeast Asia, many of them are rich or famous, with strong economic backing and independent feelings. But later, with the development, the internal division continued. For example, the computer department was dismantled to the Institute of Science and Technology, and the current pure economic institute was gradually formed.
