Gabriel Magellan, whose Chinese name is Sven, is a Portuguese missionary in China. He arrived in Beijing on 1648 and lived there for 29 years. This book, written by him in Portuguese, was originally named "Twelve Characteristics of China", which is one of the foundational works of early Sinology in the West.
