Andersen's literary career began with 1822 writing plays. After entering the university, the creation has become increasingly mature. He has published travel notes, musical comedies, poetry collections and poetic dramas. The novel Impromptu Poet published by 1835 has won him an international reputation and is his masterpiece of adult literature.
Andersen's representative works include The Firm Tin Soldier, The Daughter of the Sea, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes and so on.

In order to commemorate Andersen's outstanding contribution in the field of fairy tales, the International Children's Reading Alliance (IBBY) established the International Andersen Award on 1956. It is awarded to children's book writers and illustrators every two years to reward and thank them for writing a good book, My Fairy Tale Life.
The award is sponsored by Danish Queen Margrethe II and named after the fairy tale master Andersen.
