At present, university libraries play an important role in education and teaching. We should give full play to the role of university library and reflect its role in university education. On the one hand, our library needs to continuously inject new books and strengthen the hardware construction of university libraries; On the other hand, we need to strengthen the management of university libraries, that is to say, we should do a good job in the reference service of university libraries. Especially in the face of the arrival of the current information age, major universities have realized the important role of libraries, strengthened the construction of hardware facilities in university libraries, and invested a lot of money in hardware investment, ignoring the construction of consulting service teams in university libraries. In my opinion, in order to provide readers with comprehensive information about relevant contents conveniently, quickly and labor-saving, university libraries put forward new requirements for university library consultants, which inevitably requires us to keep pace with the times, fully understand the consulting services of university libraries, have the corresponding abilities that university library consultants should have in the new period, and give ourselves a clear role orientation.

I. Contents and Forms of Consulting Services in University Libraries in the New Era At present, with the gradual increase of readers in university libraries and the continuous expansion of library service channels, the content of consulting services in university libraries has gradually changed from providing readers with some simple questions and answers face to face to a reader-centered model. Through the background management of librarians, literature retrieval and book classification, users can have a deeper understanding of the specific work content and information of library collection resources. In addition, in the process of reference service, some users often ask the same kind of questions, so the library consulting service should establish a general answer sheet for basic questions, which is conducive to answering users' related inquiries uniformly, accurately and quickly, thus improving service efficiency and reducing service costs. In addition, some lectures, user training, literature retrieval and other library-related courses can be held throughout the school to further improve the effective utilization of literature resources, carry out mass reading activities, and attract readers to use library resources through activities. With the gradual construction of university libraries, there are already paper books and online e-books, which inevitably requires our library's consulting service to gradually change from traditional face-to-face service to real-time consultation, online consultation and online mail consultation.

Second, the work of library reference service personnel

In the new era, the quantity and information of all kinds of books have increased sharply compared with the past, which inevitably requires our university librarians to have certain abilities, do their own role positioning to meet the requirements of the new era, and do a good job in the corresponding library consulting service. The author believes that the current university library consultants should be strict with themselves and improve themselves from the following aspects.

(A) should comprehensively improve their professional ethics.

The value of university library lies in its service for university students. If it can't reflect its educational service value, it has no value. As a consultant of university library, the most important thing is to fully realize the importance of what you are doing and strengthen the improvement of your professional ethics. First of all, we are required to have the spirit of love and dedication, base ourselves on our jobs and do our best to do our jobs well. Secondly, we should strengthen the sense of service, treat all readers at school equally, strive to treat every reader fairly and respect all their behaviors of pursuing progress and learning knowledge. Thirdly, we should keep thinking, be good at discovering the reading psychology of different readers, provide targeted consulting services for readers, and improve the quality of library services.

(B) must have a certain network technology capabilities

With the rapid development and comprehensive popularization of network technology, the traditional reference service in Chinese universities can hardly meet the requirements of modern users for high speed, high knowledge content and high information concentration. Therefore, on the basis of traditional reference service, network reference service has been inherited and developed. To do a good job in network reference service, reference service personnel are required to have certain network technical ability and provide users with comprehensive, brand-new and information-intensive consulting services through computer networks.

(C) should have a certain self-study ability and innovative consciousness

If you want to serve readers comprehensively, you must have certain theoretical knowledge. Because our current university library serves not only some undergraduates, but also some graduate students and doctoral students, whose theoretical knowledge level is relatively high, so we as consultants must not ask questions without knowing them. This requires us to have certain self-study ability and pay attention to improving our theoretical level. We should also make full and reasonable use of modern network technology information, constantly innovate work forms, broaden our thinking and carry out various forms of consulting services.

(d) Good communication skills.

In the library work, having good language expression and communication skills can make the consulting service more in-depth and smooth, and can also give full play to the role of university libraries, so that libraries can lay a teaching foundation for university education and provide corresponding information resources for various scientific research activities in universities. In the "Guide to the Behavior of Reference and Information Service Personnel" in the United States, consulting service is regarded as a process of interpersonal communication, and it is also stipulated that "the language or written language suitable for consulting work" should be used in the consulting process, and it is believed that "the initial verbal and non-verbal reactions of the library will determine the tone of the whole communication process between librarians and readers, and will also affect the level and depth of communication between them".
