That's used to detect magnetic fields. There are bar codes somewhere on books and clothes with magnetic fields on them. When you pay, the cashier will take the instrument to scan the bar code, which is called degaussing, otherwise the door detector will ring. If you pass the instrument without degaussing, there will be an alarm, and the degaussing will not sound until the cashier pays with the instrument.
