Academician Wu Zhengyi has been engaged in botany research and teaching for 70 years. He is an authoritative scholar of plant taxonomy, plant systematics and flora geography in China, and has made great contributions to the effective protection of plant diversity and the rational utilization of plant resources. The main results are as follows:

I. Plant Taxonomy and Plant Systematics

During the period of 1942- 1952, more than 30,000 China plant cards containing type specimens and related literature information were completed, which accumulated the earliest data for compiling Flora of China. He took part in organizing and leading the compilation of Flora of China from 1959, became the editor-in-chief from 1987, and led the completion of Flora of China (80 volumes, 126 volumes) in 2004. This book is the most complete record of the species, characteristics and distribution of higher plants in China. It is the crystallization of the collective labor of three generations of botanists, among which Academician Wu Zhengyi played the most crucial role and made special contributions. He presided over the compilation of Flora of Yunnan and Flora of Tibet in Key Areas of China. Through these flora, the species and distribution of existing plants in China are systematically and comprehensively answered, and the basic family background of plant resources in China is found out. It has made fundamental contributions to botany research in China, and its scientific significance and application value are extensive and far-reaching.

Participated in the investigation of plant resources in China and published 1766 new taxa of plants, which was the largest number of plants discovered and named by botanists in China, and changed the history that plants in China were mainly named by foreign scholars.

Second, the flora geography

Scientifically divided the distribution types of plants, families and genera in China, clarified their historical sources, and formed an original research method and academic thought of flora geography. This paper expounds the composition and origin of seed plants in China, puts forward the tropical genetic relationship of China flora, and completes the flora division and vegetation division of China, which provides scientific basis for plant resource protection, agriculture and forestry division and land improvement. On the basis of comprehensive analysis of global flora, it is proposed that East Asia should become an independent flora, that is, "East Asian Flora", and the zoning system of land plants in the world has been revised. It has made innovative contributions to the development of flora geography in China.

Three. Plant Diversity Protection and Plant Resources Science

In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was responsible for the investigation of rubber suitable forest land, and together with several other experts, he solved some key technical problems of rubber planting in China, alleviating the strategic materials that the country urgently needed and lacked.

It is pointed out that the formation of plant useful substances is related to the distribution and formation history of plant species, which promotes the search, development and utilization, introduction and domestication of plant resources in China.

The proposal of establishing "nature reserve" and "wild animal germplasm resource bank" has been highly valued and implemented by the party and the government, which has made forward-looking and pioneering contributions to biodiversity protection, sustainable utilization of resources and harmonious coexistence between man and nature in China.

Four. Other relevant materials of Academician Wu Zhengyi.

He has won 6 national first and second prizes and 8 provincial first and second prizes. He was awarded 1995 Science and Technology Progress Award of Heliang Heli Foundation, 1996 Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award of Realistic Foundation, 1999 International Universe Award, 200 1 Yunnan Outstanding Contribution Award of Science and Technology, and 2003 Heliang Heli Foundation Science and Technology Achievement Award.

Published more than 40 papers/kloc-0, and edited more than 20 monographs. China Vegetation, the paper Study on Floristic Zoning in China and the monograph Distribution Types of Seed Plants in China have been among the best in this discipline and become classics in botany, ecology and other fields. The published "Floristic Analysis of China" and "Tropical Kinship Theory" have attracted international attention, and have been widely quoted in the textbooks of China University.

Together with scientists from all over the world, he promoted the compilation of Flora of China, an English revised edition of Flora of China, and served as the editor-in-chief of China, making great contributions to the world of botany in China.

Academician Wu Zhengyi has trained a large number of outstanding young scientists with his rigorous academic attitude, profound attainments and high respect. They are now academic leaders and backbones active in related fields. Now, Academician Wu Zhengyi still insists on scientific research. In recent years, some academic works have been published. June, 5438+October, 2007/KLOC-0, he was invited as the editor-in-chief of China Biology Dictionary.

Academician Wu Zhengyi is an internationally renowned botanist who has made outstanding contributions to the development of modern botany in China, the internationalization of botany in China and the protection and utilization of plant resources.
