Anhui Normal University is the earliest institution of higher learning in Anhui. It is located in Wuhu, a state-level open city with the reputation of "Huizhou charm and a city of thousands of lakes". It is close to the vast Yangtze River and the beautiful Zheshan Mountain. Set the beauty of Jiangnan nature and the essence of Anhui humanities. It is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Anhui Province and the Ministry of Education. It was selected as the national key Marxist institute (the only one in Anhui Province) and won the second place.

The school's predecessor was the provincial Anhui University 1928 founded in Anqing. 1946 was renamed as National Anhui University, and 1949 moved to Wuhu in February. Later, it went through several stages of running a school, such as Anhui Normal University, Hefei Normal University, Southern Anhui University and Anhui University of Workers and Peasants. 1972, approved by the State Council, was officially named Anhui Normal University. In 2005, Wuhu Normal University was merged into Anhui Normal University.

At present, the school has departments of literature, Marxism, law, economics and management, music, fine arts, history, education, foreign languages, sports, journalism and communication, mathematics and statistics, computer and information, physics and electronic information, chemistry and materials science, geography and tourism, international education and teacher education.

The school is one of the first universities in China that are allowed to recruit foreign students at public expense. It is also a national Chinese education base, an international exchange and cooperation base in Anhui Province, and an international promotion center for Chinese in Anhui Province. With the United States, Britain, France, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and other countries (regions), dozens of institutions of higher learning, scientific research institutions, academic groups and educational institutions have established long-term friendly cooperation and academic exchanges.
