Hegel mainly said that the speculative nature of Chinese civilization is insufficient. German classical philosophy holds that the place where speculative learning (metaphysics) stops is the place where positivism (science) begins. Due to the lack of speculation, it can not provide a basis for the development of science, and China civilization has always been repeated in a simple cycle, unable to sublimate. Therefore, Hegel does not admit that China has any profound scholarship, such as philosophy, mathematics, aesthetics, physics and so on. And there are only some simple experiences. Many rationalists of the continental school have similar views. Relatively speaking, British and American empiricists have a higher evaluation of Chinese civilization. They often affirm the civilization of China, because China is a big country.
