197 1 Implement six-year free primary education. At present, primary education in Hong Kong is divided into eight learning areas and two learning stages.
The eight learning areas are:
Chinese (including Chinese and Putonghua classes)
English
mathematics
Science education (including in general research)
Science and technology education (including common sense and information technology)
Personal, social and humanities (included in general research)
Art (including music and visual arts)
PE
The two learning stages are:
The first learning stage: from primary school to junior high school;
The second learning stage: from primary four to primary six;
At the end of each learning stage, students are required to participate in a territory-wide systematic assessment organized by the Education and Manpower Bureau, and the assessment results will help the authorities understand the differences in students' abilities. After graduating from primary school, all students in Hong Kong will be allocated by the Central Education and Manpower Bureau to attend voluntary secondary schools.
