Lanzhou Jiaotong University, founded in 1958, is the third railway university in China jointly established by the prestigious Tangshan Railway Institute (now Southwest Jiaotong University) and Beijing Railway Institute (now Beijing Jiaotong University). At that time, it was named Lanzhou Railway Institute, and Hua Meng, director of the Education Bureau of the Ministry of Railways, served as the dean of the Institute.

From the end of 1950s to the end of 1990s, under the leadership of the Ministry of Railways, the school implemented the management system of running schools by industry. In 2000, the management system of "combining the central and local governments and giving priority to local government management" was implemented. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Lanzhou Jiaotong University.

At the beginning, the Ministry of Railways chose a barren beach at the foot of Beishan Mountain on the outskirts of Lanzhou as the permanent school site. When the school was first established, it encountered three years of difficulties. Facing the challenges of sandstorm, cold and hunger, Jia, the old dean, and Zhou Daoyuan, the old secretary who lived in Yan 'an, led the teachers and students to carry forward the Yan 'an spirit of "self-reliance and hard struggle", leveled the land, built school buildings and built their homes, and went through an arduous road of entrepreneurship.

The once barren beach has now become a beautiful campus with lush trees and lush grass. The Beishan, which is backed by the school, is no longer exposed by loess, but covered by green trees. The school has always adhered to the construction policy of "strict word first, iron discipline, unity and cooperation, and high-quality service" of the Ministry of Railways, adhered to strict management and standardized management, and trained a number of engineers who are competent for the industry.

At the beginning of the school, according to the needs of railway construction, five departments of railway construction, railway bridge and tunnel, railway transportation, railway motor and railway machinery were established, and seven majors were set up.

Among them, the Department of Railway Transportation and the Department of Railway Motor were established by Beijing Railway Institute, while the Department of Railway Architecture, Railway Bridge and Tunnel Department and Railway Machinery Department were established by Tangshan Railway Institute. At that time, Professor Lin Damei, one of the founders of China's railway transportation discipline, Professor Hu Chunnong, a famous bridge expert, Professor Shen Zhiyang, a famous mechanical expert, Professor Yin, a famous radio technology expert Ban Jichao, a famous mathematician, etc., transferred more than 340 faculty members from Jingtang School in the year when the school was founded.

Later, the Ministry of Railways transferred a group of associate doctors and graduate students studying in the Soviet Union to enrich the teaching staff, which laid the backbone position of railway specialty and a solid foundation for professional teachers at the beginning of the school.

Over the past half century, the school has made great progress in all aspects of construction.
