Vietnamese Prime Minister Ruan Jinyong said at the opening ceremony that Vietnam was honored to host the 48th International Olympic Mathematics Competition in Vietnam, which was the first time for Vietnam to host such an event.

523 middle school students from 95 countries took part in the competition. Saudi Arabia and Cambodia sent representatives to participate for the first time.

North Korea resumed its participation in the 48th International Olympic Mathematics Competition in 2007 after an interruption of 10 years. China won the first place in the total score of the 46th International Mathematical Olympiad. The 46th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2005 Mexico) was held in Merida, Mexico from July 8th to18th, 2005, and China won the first place with 235 points. The United States scored 2 13, and Russia won the second and third place with 2 12 respectively. China's six contestants are Ren Qingchun (Tianjin Hua Yao Middle School, full marks and gold medals), Diao Hansheng (Shanghai East China Normal University No.2 Middle School, full marks and gold medals), Ye Luo (Jiangxi Normal University High School, full marks and gold medals), Shao Xuancheng (Shanghai Fudan University High School, full marks and gold medals) and Kang Jiayin (Guangdong Shenzhen Middle School, gold medals). The Chinese leader is Xiong Bin, Department of Mathematics, East China Normal University, and the deputy leader is Wang Jianwei, Department of Mathematics, University of Science and Technology of China.
