North Minzu University is located in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is a comprehensive university for nationalities, the only ministerial-level university in China, and a university jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the China Academy of Sciences and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

From 2065438 to March 2008, North University for Nationalities was selected as the first batch of "New Engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. In May, the 34th meeting of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the list of new doctoral and master's degree awarding units and new degree awarding points in 20 17, and North University for Nationalities was newly added as a doctoral degree awarding unit.
